Cedar Point's Midway Carousel celebrates a century

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Cedar Point has reached many milestones throughout its history with record-breaking roller coasters and sky-scraping rides. This week, the Sandusky scream park celebrated another achievement as the Midway Carousel turned 100 years old.

As I think of it, none. But in all fairness, KW does have numerous attractions that are older than almost anything extant at CP, save Breakers and the Colosseum.

I get that. But a 100 year old carousel is still pretty noteworthy on its own. To most people, at least.

I concur.

The oldest surviving attraction at KW is the OLD MILL AKA Garfield's Nightmare. It was originally built in 1901. It has been rebuilt and re themed several times over the last century. The next oldest I believe is the Whip, built in 1918. The Jack Rabbit follows in 1920, followed by the Thunderbolts predecessor Pippen (substantial portions make up the Tbolt) in 1924. The Racer was built the same year that they acquired the current Wm. H. Dentzel carousel, 1927. Noah's Ark was added in 1936, the only major attraction to be added (and survived) during that decade. The Old Kennywood Railroad was added after WWII but was originally built for the NY Worlds Fair in 1939.

According to the National Carousel Association database (yes, I'm that geek...er, guy) - 22 of 382 operating carousels were originally constructed prior to 1900. Most have had some updating of figures, many have lost their band organs, and as far as I can tell, all have operated in multiple locations. Carousels are the originators of the "ride rotation" program.

There is actually a National Carousel Association? You ARE a geek for knowing that.

I'm a geek for totally appreciating that little knowledge nugget as well.

Isn't there a carousel museum in Sandusky?

Yep. In fact, they still carve horses and other animal mounts there.

Not only is there a National Carousel Association, there is a Carousel Organ Association of America as well.

My carousel has an organ donor card...
