Cedar Point is now charging a separate admission to enter its haunted houses and some mazes. The price for the haunted attraction passes − in addition to the regular park admission − vary from as little as $10 on Thursday and Sunday nights to $20 on Fridays and $30 on Saturdays.

I don’t think it’s whining… I’m sure there are locals with passes who go to parks during Halloween season every week and now they’re looking at paying an extra $30 each visit. I’d be mad if that was me.
This is Six wide, expect for Knotts, which is interesting.
And compared to what Disney and Universal up charge, and in Disneys case alot of money for no mazes or scares. Compared to something like Penn Penitentiary, plus the park itself, it’s actually still a bargain as always with their pricing.
It's a little strange that after it started to take off at CP decades ago, they didn't start charging extra, especially since they considered it a more PG variation of Knott's. They already had the model in front of them, and the old bonus weekends already demonstrated demand for the park itself late in the season.

Is it staffing that keeps them from turning this more into an after hours event ala Mickey's Not So Scary?

Unless something has chnaged, season/annual passes at Knotts do not include Haunt; it's a hard ticket event. So in a sense it has always been an upcharge.
The en****ification continues. They’ll be out of debt any time now…
I do think they're going to take a decent PR hit by springing this on folks last minute...
..but I also think they're going to make a lot of money. This was a Friday in Oct 2023. Any decent weather Haunt weekend was like this. Yeah, some of these people might stay home this year, but they'll soak the rest for $10-60 and make some good bank. I just wish they'd spend it on a f'n RMC, but I'm afraid we might wind up subsidizing upgrades for old SF parks instead...
