Carowinds plans to retire Thunder Road on July 26

Thunder Road, a classic Carowinds roller coaster, is gearing up for its final ride. The wooden roller coaster will carry its last guest on July 26 after 39 years and nearly 40 million rides, according to a Carowinds news release.

It is sad to see all these old wood racing coasters bite the dust. I can't imagine a simple out-and-back coaster (despite having two tracks) costs more to maintain than Hurler, with all its banked curves and whatnot. It seems to be in the way of progress, even though I'm sure the waterpark could have been expanded by building a path or two beneath the coaster. Let's hope Racer and Rebel Yell aren't next.
