Can someone tell me if I am on the right track?

It's good, man.  Nice pacing, and you managed to get the loops the right height so the train is slowed down enough when it goes through them.  Keep it up!

Well, it's bit jerky but that can be fixed easily. Just spend more time riding and fixing it. After finishing the layout I might spend hours just making the track smoother . Also Gs got bit out of hand at some parts ( +7 Gs on stand-up = ouch! ). And that tree on the track, that's pretty bad. Just spend bit more time with your tracks and you should be fine.
