Camcorders

Thanks for the B-day greeting...

Yes, you are allowed to use your right to freedom of speech, but you are also limited as to where you use it. If you were to walk into a place of business and start complaining to them how they run their business, they could eject you from their premises ...

Replace that business in that analogy with Coasterbuzz and you have the idea.

No, Jeff is not GOD (as you put it), but he is the OWNER of this website and he is the one paying the bills each month to keep this site running - which with the equipment and the connection to the internet runs upwards of $1000/per month. When you pay that much towards this site, then maybe Jeff would be interested in your opinion as to how this site should be run...

Thanks Great America!

Let me just say the third of the camera's you pointed out (Panasonic MiniDV PV-DC152) is the camera I own, and would definetely, definetely recommend... I absolutely love it! Its small enough to inconspicuosly take pretty much anywhere (*cough*coasters*cough*), its durable, its lightweight, and the video quality is spectacular... I've gotten non-stop use out of mine (Including video at about 9 parks), and it's never skipped a beat. I've also become very fond of the Panasonic batteries. They'll charge from fully empty in 30-45 minutes, and last probably 6 or 7 hours, and thats with constant usage... No one actually keeps a camera on for 6 or 7 hours straight, so it really lasts quite a while. It's also got some features I've become fond of, like the separate memory chip for digital still pictures, and its image stabilizer seems to be very effective.

In the end, you probably need to go over to best buy, or wherever you're shopping, and actually hold the camera's. See which one you're more comfortable with, and try to picture yourself taking it places. Then compare the features and make a decision. That's what I did, and I came out with the Panasonic.

Redman, point taken.

I understand business, I just don't care for Jeff's holier than thou attitude.

Well, in recent memory, I do remember topics relating to both cars and food. Sorry, try again.

So, anyone out there like Doc Martens?

So what would be a reasonable pixel quality to look for if I were to be shopping for a digital camera or camcorder?

Obviously, the more expensive the better quality, but I guess what I'm really asking is what would be the best compromise of quality to affordability, keeping in mind that I just want one as a toy since I have a less-than-year-old-prefectly-fine regular film using CANON (which I bought, of course, just to kiss up to Jeff; that loveable pixie I simply refer to as "my leader".)

WOW, some of you are so easily impressed with "Jeff". He's just a guy who runs a little coaster site, he's not GOD!

Jeff's not God!?

All this time I thought spending Sunday mornings here was helping me!

"...little coaster site..."

- hehe, so where exactly is a bigger, more visited one?

Gonchar, my point was this, in the vast scheme of things this really *is* just a little coaster site. Nothing more.

I come here a couple of times a week to get some news or when I'm bored. It's not my life.

Good question. A better question would be to figure out why the people who loath me and my sites so much keep coming back. For being stupid and little, people sure do seem to care a whole lot. I try to not let stupid and little things (and people) get to me.

I hate it when people pull the "free speech" card in my house. It's usually by folks that don't understand that stating your opinion on relevant topics, regardless of if anyone happens to agree with you, is a whole lot different from stating your opinion about how I should run the site, which frankly I'm not interested in hearing. Haven't been called a Nazi or Hitler yet today, and only 12 minutes to go before midnight!

Anyway, GregLeg and I were just talking about video cameras that do stills, and sadly, none came to mind that really did both well. The problem is that in most cases the CCD on a video camera has very sad resolution, because it doesn't have to be that good for NTSC television. I think we all forget how poor the quality is for TV because the pictures move!

How you intend to use stills has a lot to do with the resolution you should have, but honestly 3 megapixels is more than adequate in most cases, even for 4x6 prints at Ofoto.

Hitler! Nazi!

I have to say Canon is high class camera. My XL1 is very user friendly and the imagery is nice.

(edit: damn... so close...)

One thing that you may consider, is a small inexpensive, UV filter for the lens of your camcorder if the one you pick will accept one. I have a lowly JVC C-VHS ( tooo many initials there) and could tell the difference in the footage when using and not using the filter. The auto focus works better and you dont get glare and extreme shadows on the footage. I got mine at the electronics store that I got my camcorder at. Your manual should be able to tell you what type to get. It is a good investment.......

I've got a Canon Optura 100mc that I'm very happy with. I can manage 1280x960 stills which isn't too bad a place to start. If you really want both, you'll need to get a digital camera as well. That's just the breaks.

Check out what's available, though. Companies are constantly upgrading. Remember, though. If you go Sony, you're stuck with their proprietary memory stick format.

I'm not as keen on avoiding Sony on the camcorder front but I wouldn't even consider touching them on the digital camera side.

Oh! Just missed the midnight deadline. Thank you for playing. ;)

The XL1 is a pretty serious camera... how'd you justify that expense? I have to say that if I wanted a serious camera, I'd probably have to get something closer to my old pro gear I once used.
