CAC 2003 trip - PNE

On my way to CAC at Silverwood, I of course took the chance to visit Playland. We got to Vancouver and checked into our sweet at the Westin Hotel (the sweets aren't that much more and the view is AMAZING.) So enough of this stupid crap, here's what I thought of Playland and the Fair's ride selection:

Coaster- Surprisingly, not at all what I had expected. I thought it was going to run along the lines of the Californian Giant Dippers with lots of floater air and some killer laterals. Turns out this ride is ALL ejector air with some small lats. I actually got hurt on my first ride (in the backseat) because you hit the lapbar with such force... I got a bruise equivalent of 10 Magnum rides. I was very puzzled on my first ride because you would get into the drop, then it would throw you out of your seat just before the pullout, there wasn't any substained airtime. The backseat was on drugs, but I prefered the front... not as extreme and it felt fast. Very fun little coaster, amazingly smooth, but the trains look incredibly horrible (tracked well though, this had to be the most smooth wooden coaster ever.) Rode it 6 times through the day... thing got a little faster at night but not like some coasters.

Corkscrew- I don't know what to think of this coaster. After 3 rides, each was very different. The first ride was in the front of car 5 and it was amazing. There was AWESOME airtime, the corkscrews were very disorienting, and I had no headbanging. Awesome, it was the best corkscrew coaster I had been on by far. But I just had to ride it again. The second and third times there wasn't that much airtime, it was very rough, and the corkscrews didn' deliver. Maybe one of the trains runs well while one runs like a piece of crap? Who knows, but I'm going to rank this based off of my first ride just because it was so good.

Wild Mouse- Ummm, no. This mouse just did nothing for me. It had some laterals, nothing too strong, and some airtime, nothing too extreme. Not to mention horrible capacity... it was fun just didn't run that extra mile and I really, really like mice. I don't want it to sound like I am bashing this mouse, because I actually liked it better than most Macks.

Hellivator- My first combo tower. I had been on a Space Shot and a Turbo Drop, but the idea of a combo was something new. The launch was good, didn't seem real extreme, and the drop felt like any S&S drop. The more I ride S&S's towers, the more I adore Intamin's work. Not to mention the Mose drop tower they had right next to Hellivator. Damn that thing had air! Anyways, I rode this "tower-o-terror" 3 times, and it cost me $5 Canadian a pop. Went ahead and got a shirt too.

The Revelation- Oh my god. Oh my god. Rode 2 times, $16 Canadian each. My second ride was really cool, but my first ride was amazing. I had a SFMW Zone shirt on, so me and one of the operators got talking about coasters. When he locked me in, he left a lot of space (said I'd really ejoy it being a "thrillseeker") and manually operated the ride. not only did I get an INCREDIBLY long cycle, when I stopped at the top, he abruptly moved the ride back and forth to get me rocking and even flipping. That was easily one of the most scary moments of my life. Awesome ride and completely worth the money. Maybe it helps that all I had to compare my hieght to was a few small fair rides and some monster trucks? Whatever it was, this is my favorite flat.. if you can even call it that!

Drop Zone by Skycoaster- It was a 100' model just like the one at Marine World (my home) yet it didn't have the same effect. Can't deny a Skycoaster though! Great ride, rode once at $20 Canadian.

The Flume (whatever it's called)- Ok, people in the park seemed to love it. It was fun, but what can you expect from a portable flume? Rode 1 time.

Twin Flip- Well I have to give this ride major "props" just for being so freakin insane. The show it puts on at night with ligths and smoke is something I have yet to see paralled by other flats. Mose Rides made it, and I'm starting to wonder is one of these would even end up being installed in a park? Very good flat, but I only got 1 ride. Sorry, I don't know what else I could say to describe this ride. :)

Hell's Gate- This Huss Top Spin should be named Tsunami or something. I never knew that the water could be so effective. The best part of the ride programing is on the 7th consecutive flip (you read that right!) you hit the foutains and shoot water out onto the midway. It was just so cool, and had pretty good programing to go with it. Got 1 ride.

Spin Out- Very fun ride (especially the lateral airtme, genious!) but the pain factor was a little high from all the lateral force. Still very good, and an amazing smoke/light show at night.

Notes about the park: Not charming, but more a fair with a charming coaster. They're new ride is a scad tower built off of a crane (no way I was going to ride it) and so I made it onto a lot of Canadian news B-roll (they filmed it all at Coaster) which is cool I guess. I had a really good time, and I'm glad to say I rode the classic Coaster.

Silverwood is actually after my trip to Southern California on the 20th... I'm all over the place!

I really wish that I could have gone down to WIld Waves Enchanted VIlliage... maybe I'll talk my uncle or someone into taking me. :)

Just a note, please forgive the typos, I'm on some Web TV thingy at the hotel and the keyboard is difficult to use.
