Bye bye Astroworld!

And as for the idea to save AstroWorld, haha. I tip my hat to you for going all out as to make such a suggestion.

Well, somebody was bound to say it sooner or later. ;)

"And not to mention that that park is land-locked and there's practically no where to expand the park."

A park isn't necessarily doomed when it runs out of land. Just "recycle" and get rid of all the old junk whenever space is needed for something new. (Of course I realize that AstroWorld has other problems, though)

He was talking about Six Flags America, Houston doesnt have a "Hurricane Harbor".

A good portion of the money spent on SFA in 2005 went to renovations of Hurricane Harbor and not just to new attractions. Selling the entire park to developers would net a HUGE loss as all that money spent on painting buildings and walkways and other investments that can't be "moved" to other parks would just have been a waste. I'm sure the selling of SFAW has been in development for a while, hence the lack of major additions over the last few seasons.

According to SixFlagsHouston.com, these were the additions for '04:

  • XLR-8 painted blue and orange, receives new queue canopies.
  • Ultra Twister repainted Lime Green and Navy Blue.
  • Batman The Escape repainted yellow and black.
  • Viper tunnel repainted.
  • New front gate canopy installed.
  • New Six Flags AstroWorld sign is erected over front gate.
  • New Six Flags welcome sign and electronic LED scroll sign added to parking toll plaza.
  • Freeway side of Reliant Showcase Theatre repainted.
  • Old Excalibur theming returns to Nottingham Village.
  • So they did make a few other additions, mainly to the entrance that won't be moved.
  • Untrue, attendance was about tied with Fiesta Texas. In the middle of the pack, not near the bottom.

Oh wow. I guess it's not really a surprising move as this is one of their lowest attended parks, but this place has a lot of history.. Which kept drowning in the history of other parks, so I guess there wasn't much left of its original self anyways. I'm sad to see it go, but it will help SF out and I'm not sure what amusement company would even want to purchase the park if SF sold it as a park. This may leave up to 15 coasters floating around for SF is they get out of NO as well.

I was shocked to hear the news. I have been *through* most of Texas but I have never been to any of the parks there.

Oh well. Hopefully the coasters will be relocated or whatever.

Anyone else here plan to make a farwell trek to Astroworld? I'm from Cleveland and I plan on making it down before the end of the season.

I remember reading a couple months ago about a parking issue. The spot they used for parking was either raising their rates to a extremely high fee or it was being redeveloped and would no longer be a parking lot. Thus giving SFAW guest no place to park. I will try and find the article.

    Thanks,

They won't be doing much with the Astrodome for a while. But if you looked were SFOT is, its like in the center of the city... prime real estate. But what will they do with Swat...? I had forgoten about that until now
SFOT is in no danger. It is owned by a limited partnership and managed by SF, so they would not be able to sell the property. Besides, it doesn't have the parking problem that AW had, which was probably the only reason this is happening in Houston. It's not a coincidence that parking negotiations broke down less than a week before this announcement. SFOT also sits adjacent to Ameriquest Field (Rangers) and the site of the new Cowboys stadium, both of which are surrounded by acres of land ripe for development.

I said it on another forum and I'll say it here: Astroworld was no Cedar Point or Epcot, but it was still an amusement park and a bad day at any amusement park is better than a good day at work. AW had a certain charm about it and it was drastically unappreciated by people who didn't call it their home park.

I guess this means ACE loses a couple of Coaster Classics.

Isn't Georgia Cyclone one? I know Greezed Lightning is.

Oh well. Sad to see a historical park bite the dust, but quite frankly, SFAW was nothing more than an old ride graveyard. A very sad shell of it's former self.

Now, let's wait and see which underperforming park is next on the chopping block...

Texas Cyclone you mean? No, it's not a Coaster Classic. I doubt anything with Morgan trains is...

Kind of a bummer though. I only went to Astroworld once, as a kid, but that was where I rode my very first coaster (the long-gone Excalibur). I almost went back a few years ago, and now won't get the chance. Oh well.

Instead I now live near one of the other two neglected Six Flags parks... Kentucky Kingdom... which has its own unique issues, including parking, though it's not exactly a problem like it is in Houston.

now that is very true i would not put it out of the question to see one of the rollercoaster show up on the kemah board walk
Does SFAW have an enterprise? if so then it looks like they can send it to SFA for parts....better yet the whole ride seeing as their enterprise hasn't operated in over 5 years now.

I'd also like to see Swat relocated there as well, would be a fitting replacement for the roto-shake which hardly seems to operate right anymore.

Now it's too early to say wether or not we'll see these rides finding new homes in time for 06,as it takes time to plan out & approve new(used installations)....still it looks like 06 might prove to be an interesting season for SF if these rides do get relocated fast enough.

I think that six flags will soon go under and that Ceder fair will then will rule the states taking paromont and disney down too in the end i belive that is what will happpen.
no we dont have one its sucks all we got was the second hand rides that you people where tired of.
So really its all you people's fault you all were greed and could no share so that why my hometown park is closing good work people i hope you feel happy about youre self cuase it all you guys fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, it's MY fault. I told 'em to do it. I mean REALLY.
No it's not "our fault" it's Burke's fault for wasting the capital for rides on SFMM or SFGRADV when it should've been used to help the smaller parks in the chain.

Besides you've still got SFOT &SFFT to visit, which are both pretty good parks in their own right so why complain? now if let's say PKD were to close then I'd be in a similar uproar, but it's not so why get all upset over it?

Well this stinks. I was planning on going to TX next year for the 3 SF parks but now am reconsidering.
