Are you sure about FoF not running 3 trains since the modifications? I could have swown last year they were running all three at least a few times I was at the park. I don't believe I have seen three this year though.

Technically the ride's already been altered since it opened in 1979. The second tunnel was not a complete tunnel until they covered the right side. Also, the Beast's "lair" during the final helix was covered on top, but not completely covered on the sides allowing light to come in. That was also altered at some point in its history.Someone please correct me if I am off with any of this information, seeing as how the ride is 3 years older than I am!
You're pretty close. What is now the second tunnel was actually two separate short tunnels, that's why there is concrete at both ends--those were the original tunnels. They boarded up the space between the two tunnels by year two (or maybe year three) to make one long tunnel. The final helix had a roof only and was completely enclosed by year two. Also there were changes made to the banking on the turn leaving the first tunnel and the banking on the final helix, both were increased due to the speed. If I have my facts correct they made some adjustments to the first turn during the first year of operation, but waited to change the helix until the off season.
I agree with Chuck, the Beast was designed for four trains but it never ran four, only three. I believe the long mid course brake run was supposed to serve as a block brake but it could not reliably stop the train, so it has functioned as nothing more than a trim since opening day.
