A seven-year-old boy seriously injured in a swimming pool accident at a Quebec water park has lost both legs below the knee. One of the boy's legs was severed Monday when he got caught in an intake pipe at the bottom of the pool. Alexis Auclair had been playing in the pool at the water park in Saint-Pie, about 50 kilometres east of Montreal. "He was sucked up in the tube," said witness Frederik Chrétien, an employee at Le Camping des Glissades d'eau St-Pie. leg was amputated in hospital.

^I'll try to answer.

1. Could have been either reflective glare on the water or it's proximity (the intake) from the end of the chute, churning water distorting images.2. I can only guess he was exploring the pool. This is sad.

Notice the Google ads at the bottom when you read that article? Yeesh.
Sick... I just listened to the news and the lifeguard who saved the kid's life was interviewed. She mentionned she wasn't even informed there was such an intake, with such a motor (30 HP!) and only a press on plastic grate on it. So, if you don't even inform your lifeguards about such a thing... that tells a lot about your management.
Jesus, that's like something straight from Final Destination.

These lifeguards or service staff were not doing the safety checks properly.
There was a case in Victoria BC in "94 where a lifeguard was stuck to the intake for a waterslide.
No one was made aware of the intake location in that case. The guard went where she
shouldn't have and the supervisor didn't stop her. It is truly unfortunate for this young boy I hope
that the family takes the appropriate measures.
I worked a waterpark that was a lawsuit waiting to happen.
The inservice training/preseason was a joke at the best of time, Their saying was
"we don't call ambulances."
