B&M Zero cars

Jeff's avatar
Does anyone know why certain B&M rides have "zero" cars (the bogies without seats) and others don't? All B&M trains, sit-down, stand-up, floorless and inverted are essentially the same devices with different seating devices.

Floorless coasters don't have them, for obvious reasons. Raptor doesn't, but Alpengeist does.

Can anyone solve this mystery?

If you mean the "noses" of the trains, I think they are there just for style.

Sitdowns such as Kumba, stand-ups such as Mantis have the fronts to make the trains look "traditional," or enclosed. Floorless and inverted have the open fronts for obvious reasons: to add to the feeling of flight. As for the Alpinegeist, I don't remember what it looks like but I'd say, for the theming effect.

BTW- I still think the front of Mantis looks like the batmobile.

That doesn't make sense to me. If it's for looks, you add cost, you add weight and you add maintenance costs for the additional 12 wheels.

I know that people film video from the "zero car" on Alpengeist.
I was told by a ride op for alpengeist that the reason ithas the zero car is because of speed. If you notice, thats were the magnets are for safety. So that sort of makes some sense.

Magnets? What are you talking about?

I've been thinking about this for a few months and these are the best things I could come up with.

#1 They are used to add speed. This would explain why they are on some and not others. I guess for this theroy to be supported we would have to know if the weight of the zero cars are different.

#2 They have somehting to do with the sensors. Although I don't see why they would be on some but not others.

Rideman would probably know this.
They are to add momentum to the train, to help pull it through the inversions.

That sounds like a logical explanation to me.
