Bluegrass Boardwalk opening in question, will not open with roller coasters

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

There will be no major roller coasters running at Bluegrass Boardwalk when the theme park opens at the Kentucky state fairgrounds, according to a preliminary state application that emphasizes restored and expanded water features. And the Bluegrass Boardwalk partners are acknowledging, for the first time, that delays in signing a lease and getting finances nailed down are casting doubts on whether the park will open next May as planned. They say the opening now might be pushed back to 2014.

Hmm, now all those attendance projections that we thought seemed low now seem high.

not surprising.

I've stated all along that this was a waterpark play, and little else.

I would think that the reality around the state of existing rides would have come in the "due diligence" phase. Regardless, I think we can categorize this with a lot of Six Flags projects... it was over-built, and had been for years. I assume Holiday World has less, and in some ways a less ideal location, and yet had significantly higher attendance.

While I agree the park may have been built up too quick similar to other six flags parks, it wasn't six flags that did it in this case. Since they took over in 98, the only new coaster projects that came about from their planning were a wild mouse and the twice relocated Greezed Lightnin'. Twisted Twins opened the year they took over. I'd be suprised if that was their doing.

For what it's worth, I don't think there'd be many tears shed if that awful prototype SLC never ran again...

I would dare say there would be more tears if it DID RUN again. I rode it twice, both times at preview night (with cocktails) and trust me, the cocktails were the best part of the night. There are some rides that just never need to run again (T2 and SOB being the most obvious choices).

But they don't have Fast Lane.

CW, I disagree that it's purely a waterpark play, due to the attendance figures in the lease. 600,000 visitors first year for a waterpark would instantly put them into the top 10 waterparks in the country, above even Schlitterbahn. I think they'd rather have at least 1 or 2 coasters open in the first year if they could.
