Black Diamond one of many historical features of Knoebels

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The story of Knoebels goes back to the turn of the 20th century. Long before Black Diamond opened, day-trippers would come to this spot to swim at the junction of two streams. Roaring Creek and Mugser’s Run still flow through the park (and have been the source of some devastating floods over the years).

Throw me in the Meh crowd. Phoenix is one of my favorite coasters ever. Twister was really great. The park has a great haunted house and some nice flats.

I was told I 'just don't get it...yet', but to be honest, I'm very Meh about the overall park. Good food. Neat atmosphere. Hung out with a bunch of great people and met some great new people in person. It's the last place I saw Moosh just a few months before he passed.

But I just wasn't gushing over the park the next day. If it were an hour or less, I'd go often just to ride the 2 big coasters, but otherwise I can take or leave it.

And there's nothing 'wrong' with the park. Seemed well run. Definitely one of a kind.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

With all the emphasis these days on "mega-parks", with all the latest, greatest, flashiest, tallest, highest, fastest....Knoebels just run counter to all that in every conceivable way. I've been at DMK at 2am before, but I was inside the gates, with security, employees, thousands of guests, etc. At KG, there's none of that...

And yet, I'll take that Disney reality any day.

Oh, I want BOTH, definitely....

The difference is there ARE other Disney parks...and other megaparks....

But there's only one Knoebels Grove...

And there's only one Twister. I mean, I understand the allure of Phoenix, but for me, Twister hits the spot....over and over again.

As unpopular as it is to say it, I like Twister a whole bunch too. One of my favorite coasters.

Gator, I liked your comment about their coaster upkeep. I remember both wooden coasters being very intense and very good, but not brutally rough by any means.

I rank Twister MUCH higher than Phoenix. It was running exceptionally well on my June visit. And Kozmo'a Kurves is a far cry from HSTC, but it was a fun little ride.

Different strokes I guess. We love Knoebels. We usually go there overnight as our last big hurrah of the summer and it's always a good time.

Distances from my house to the following parks and times visited in the past decade

Knoebels - 3 hours visited 7 times

Morey's Piers 1 3/4 hours visited 8 times

Hershey Park 2 hours visited 2 times

Dorney Park 1 1/4 hours visited 1 time (although I beleive this one is going to be our new "go to" park. We had a good time here and you can usually score a decent discount.

Six Flags Great Adventure 45 min. visited 1 time.

You've only been to GAdv once in the last decade? So, no Toro, no Ka?

(insert hotel joke here)

Like you said, though, to each his/her own.

We went this year, the little league was doing a fundraiser so I purchased some tickets. It was OK. I liked Hershey's coasters better overall though. Operations sucked at both. Knoebels knows how to get rides loaded and underway.

I thought Dorney was great. If you get out of WWK by lunchtime and hit the rides you walk right on.

I will say I have a huge soft spot for the Golden Nugget and it was the first coaster I ever rode, with my grandfather no less. He was an avid photographer and I believe my parents have POV 8MM films somewhere of all the old Wildwood OCNJ, and Willow Grove park coasters I need to get transfered over to digital.

Sorry, billb..my bad. Somehow my mind said you hadn't been there in recent years..that the "one time" was nearly a decade ago. I assumed. And all fans of the Odd Couple know what happens when one does that...

And I have no SPECIFIC memories of it, but Golden Nugget would probably have to be one of my first five coasters as well.

You were remembering my earlier remarks correctly. Up until a few months ago I hadn't been there in over a decade.

I wouldn't have gone if it didnt involve a fundraiser.

Honestly I can't see myself ever going there on my own volition.
