Bids start to roll in for Florida train

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Two of the bids to build Florida's high-speed rail project arrived yesterday. The rail commission plans to analyze the bids and release their findings at their March 3 meeting. The entire plan is controversial because Disney would disallow a stop on their property if it wasn't the first stop on the way to Tampa Bay, bypassing the Orange County Convention Center and competing tourist attractions.

I know you were just joking but I heard recently that Disney was looking into building an airport inside of the WDW complex, but it would only consist of 1 or 2 airlines.
Will airlines fly into a private airport? Will the FAA *let* them?
I don't think there is any recent credibility to the rumors of Disney building an airport on property but it is a fact that they have the authority from the State of Florida to do so.

If airlines couldn't fly into a "Disney airport" why couldn't Disney establish it's own airline? They have built their own cruise ships. I know it isn't going to happen but nothing is impossible.

Jeff, then suprisingly, we are on the same side of the arguement. I too say dump it.

wahoo, you misinterpreted my point. I was talking about the case were there would be high speed rail with stops on I-Drive AND a stop on Disney Property. *That* would give the "captive audience" easy access to non-Disney attractions. I completely support Disney for not wanting that.

And if the high-speed rail isnt going to help Floridian, why the hell would Floridians vote for it?

jan: There is apparently a large number of guests (2.2 million a year according to the article) who *already* forgo rental cars in favor of Disney's transportation. 2.2 MILLION! That is equvialent to an entire season's attendance at a seasonal park like SFWoA. If Disney gives access to these people to "escape" for even a day, that could create a substantial hole in their revenue.

Moreover, there is *already* express service to their parks via their charter busses. Furthermore, just about every *offsite* hotel offers some sort of service to Disney (not sure if the Universal hotels offer shuttles to Disney...but it is likely that they do), so the rail, having I-Drive stops really does *not* benefit Disney at all.

Wolf: as Wahoo alluded to, Disney could just creat their own fleet of regional jets. They would probaly partner with some other major carrier, like Delta Airlines. Delta would fly all the people from around the country to Atlanta (which you pretty much have to do to get to Orlando on Delta *anyway*) then the people would transfer to the special "Disney Jets" for the trip to Kissimmee. In fact, it would work great for both parners. Disney gets the "curbside service" and Delta would get Disney to pay for the upkeep of the planes/crew of flights they would already be making anyway. Works for me :)

But this wont happen anytime soon anyway. Too much planning to just throw up an airport. Environmental studies, blah, blah, blah,...

Yeah, I didn't mean to get on a tangent about the airport. I just thought it was interesting that Walt asked for and received the rights to develop an airport and nuclear plant on property way back in the 60's.

The case about there being terminals both on Disney property and at I-Drive won't happen. That is what this whole discussion is about. Disney won't allow it.

They might be able to put a station near Disney property but if they don't give their blessing, which hinges on the NO I-Drive stop, they won't be putting one on WDW land.

As for Floridian voters, I suspect I could get a measure on the ballot that would require all non-Floridians to wear pink tanktops and it would pass. Put a measure on the ballot that makes a senior over age 70 go back for a driver's test before getting a renewal, however, and it would fail like a Bush math test.

So then I think we've come full circle on the issue. Disney is doing what's in their best interest, and they certainly can't be blamed for that. The bigger foul is that the stupid Florida folk approved this thing in the first place.

Scrap it all. Don't build it, that's what I say. If I were Jeb Bush I'd see to it that it was on the ballot for recall post-haste.

In the mean time, what would be absolutely outstanding is a light-rail system (a la Portland or Baltimore, for example) that connected the I-Drive region from end to end, with a spur out to the airport. If Disney wouldn't want it, so be it.

Ya know what's funny? Didn't Disney try to build the original Monorail out to the airport only to have it shot down with the help of Mr. Knott?

"Know thyself!"

how many of you people actually live in orlando ? i bet none of you do .

this train wasnt designed just for the tourist, but to help the local traffic problem. disney is not the devil here, its good buisiness in my eyes. would you want a train coming to your park shipping your guests of soemwhere else? you think cedar point would allow a monorail to come into the causway and pick up riders for six flags? prolly not.

this project will happen , and theres nothing disney will say or do that will change that . they will either have a train or not either way life will go on here at disney .

and as far as you go jeff.

where do you get off calling the people who voted on this stupid? i voted for this train , i need a way to get to work faster than the 3 hours out of my day it take to drive back and forth now, because some dingleberry tourist from bolivia was given a rental car and creates a huge i-4 mess.

so for you to say that "that the stupid Florida folk" voted for this is a bit insulting to say the least . you say that but then question whether another poster because you might have thought he said your wife was stupid... seems to be a bit of a hypocritical judgement...florida folk are stupid .. but you wife cant be? please
