Batwing flying coaster introduced at Six Flags America

Posted | Contributed by eric

The newest roller coaster to be added to Six Flags America's arsenal was introduced Tuesday to invited guests. The exciting new flying coaster is the third of its kind in the world and simulates the sensation of flying by placing riders beneath the track in a flying position. The coaster is 115 feet tall, reaches a top speed of 50 mph and features eight inversions along 3,340 feet of track.

A written review and ten photos of this new roller coaster have been added to the Ride Reviews section of the Ultimate Rollercoaster.

Why does six flags have to clone all of there coasters? Because this looks just like X-Flight ;)

Who cares? What difference does it make? Do you think the people in Cleveland and DC care that there's an identical coaster somewhere else?

Why do they clone coasters? So I don't have to make the 6 1/2 hour trip to SFWOA. I thank them for that. People from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and DC don't want to drive to Ohio if they don't have to. Cloning is a good thing and its been going on since the golden age of coasters.

The review was excellent and Alex was a nice guy to boot. I agree that from a distance it looks rather simple, but once you ride you will discover the power of Batwing. *** This post was edited by Intamin Fan on 6/14/2001. ***
I live in Maryland, and made the trip to Ohio last weekend. I made the obligatory stop at Cedar Point, and swung by SFWoA Sunday morning for my first ride on X-Flight. The wait was about 1 1/2 to 2hrs, due to only 1 train and a short break down, but the ride was incredible. I have never experienced a feeling like that before. The only problem with X-Flight is the location. Building the ride in what used to be part of the parking doesn't allow for much in the way of scenery to interact with.
I have not ridden Batwing yet, but I have seen it. It is tucked righ up against the woods behind S:ROS. I know that the first drop and the tun into the loop will feel much more intense that X-Flight, because you will feel liek you are about to fly into the forest.
Even though the two are clones, location and the surrounding area can have a HUGE impact on the quality and intensity of the ride.
Yep, i am gald to see a "flyer" on the east coast. For those that have taken a ride on these types of coasters: do you ever feel pressure/discomfort in your lower back area during this ride? Alex Bove in his review mentioned positive G-forces being on the high side (a good thing), and I wonder when in the face-down position if there is any back strain. I am one of countless people that must be careful not to strain my back (lifting/shoveling, etc.). No coaster to date has ever hurt me, tho, and I never think about it while waiting to ride or when riding. I am curious about these due to the almost prone upside-down positioning and since Batwing and X-flight are radically new. Looks like the support at the chest and knees is good...is your midsection held in as well?

I know you rider Gonna miss me when I'm gone
Back strain isn't much of a problem, as when you flip under the track, you hang down a little off the back of the seat. Your mid-secton is held in by a vest, aznd the vest can leave a few red marks around the arm pitsa, but that's about it. The sheer power and intensity of the ride is amazing! Definatly ranks with Superman as the best ride in the park, and even on the eastcoast!:)

TITAN Laps: 7
Word has it that there are significant problems with X-Flight in Ohio and that the one train operation might last a while. Prepare for some long lines!!!
It's a little thing called $!

I agree with Intamin Fan 100% on this one, that is the exact reason why we have these clones so that we who live on the east coast can enjoy the same ride without having to go to Ohio or where ever else to ride them.I live in northern VA.and SFA is my home park so I'm glad that we finally have a flying dutchman to call our own.On july 7th I'll be riding that sucker all day long!

batwing high may she fly long may she roll!
Medusa: I'm not 100% sure Batwing is running yet, but I would assume so since the press day was Tuesday. I might get over there in the next few days, and if I have confirmation, I will post here early next week.
As far as Jokers Jinx, when it runs slow, it is bearable. But when it is running fast, I suggest hloding your head tight to one side to avoid the banging as much as possible.
I wouldn't worry about back pain. The weirdest sensation I experienced after 10 rides was that at 2:45 in the morning I still felt like I was riding. I could still feel the harness on my body.
Randy is Outer limits flights of fear mr freeze and poltrigeist rough and also is poltrigeist the same design as joker. What are poltrigeist colors
all i ahve to say is it BETTER BE OPEN!!!!!! im going to SFA this saturday, and its my first time in the park!! actually, its my first time to a Six Flags park ever, so im pumped!! :) anyway, i hope its open...maybe that will take the crowds off the other coasters...hey, a question for all you SFA regulars...does it get pretty crowded on Saturdays, or does it depend? what are the average waits for the rides?? just thought id throw that out :)

I just love it when people like Six Flags America! ;) I love it its only like a 45 min. drive for me. All the coaster sites love SFMM and CP and SFWOA but neglect SFA, which is a GREAT park. And theres something about the SFA version of Superman... its just a great ride.

The only truly great roller coaster: Six Flags America's Superman Ride of Steel
,i was originaly plaining to go to SFA this week on wednsday but i wasnt able to :( becouse of the very high humidity and temps around 105! but ill be at SFA on SUNDAY AUGUST 19th! and i canot wait to ride batwing, see the technology used for the new styled station, heck i cant even wait to just see the batwing!!! also iam plaining a ride on SROS since i didn't get to catch a ride on it on my visit to SFA last year since it was down all day due to a probelm with the lift hills chain...so iam hopeing that like someone said that batwing will lower the lines for sros! :) as well as be an awesome COASTER EXPIERENCE!!
