BALDER than the rest

A brilliant feature of Intamins second New Generation Woody BALDER can be found here:

http://www.coastersandmore.de/Rides/Balder/baldermain.shtml

Its all written in german, but there are many pictures which can all be enlarged (recommended to watch them all).

The text is a description of the layout, and gives detailed information about the updated magnetic braking system and other technical stuff.

If you browse the site, you will as well find amazing Expedition Geforce pictures amongst others.

Great site. Thanks for the link.

Holy crap. How steep is that first drop?!? And the bunny hop that's parallel to the lift hill .... (mouth gapes open)

What a great looking ride!!! Gerstlauer trains? Anyone?? They look cool anyway.

A quote from RCDB: "Balder is the son of the gods Frigg and Odin."

Well, this coaster looks friggin' slam-odin!

jf - Those trains are Intamin.
I'd love to see one of these Stateside PROVIDED it doesn't get all 'Pointed-up. You know, done CP-style with -ests hanging all over it.

Man, Intamin wooden coaster trains look wack. I never thought I'd see the day that we have "Stadium Seating" on a woodie. :)

Any idea why they chose to use these trains instead of the hyper-esque ones on Colossos? Although I've never had a problem with 3 row cars on a woodie.

Yeah but that day came and went way back in 2001 when Colossos opened up. ;)

JC, who loves the plug 'n' play design!

EDIT: Andy, they are the same trains that are on Colossos.

Those trains... ugh. I don't doubt their quality, but their aesthetics need work. A lot of work.

Ask about my references

Andy, aren't those the same three benchers that are on Collosus?

Collusus is almost all pointed up as it's the second tallest woodie out there and I have yet to hear any complaints other then it is just too smooth. It even has polyurethane wheels.

If given the choice I'd choose a hamburger over a hotdog anyday of the week.

I actually like the trains.. Don't get me wrong though, I think they're ugly, however, I feel most modern wooden coaster trains out there look totally the same. I'm glad there is something different no matter how ugly it is.

Anyone ridden this yet? How is it?
God would that fit nicely on a certain plot of land currently occupied by a not so awesome wooden ride...

Really, those are some awesome photos, and I really liked the ones of GeForce too....Europe may not have a ton of coasters but they do know how to do 'em right.

I have not ridden it yet. But I absolutely love Colossos, and friends who have ridden both all have the same verdict:

It blows Colossos out of the water!

Insane airtime and manic speed which feels enhanced when the train dashes through the wooden structure during the second half of the trip.

The track is literally stacked in two floors over each other. It is incredibly tight and narrow.

@ Den: the first drop is 70°! This dethrones Colossos for the steepest drop on a wooden coaster.

Hrm. I guess I just wasn't paying too much attention. I thought the trains on Colossos were the same as the hyper trains but just with different body paneling. They do have different paneling than the Balder ones, right? I don't remember them being as boxy/ugly.

Wow, that's some wacky banking too, nearly horizontal in a few spots. Cool.
Not doubting the quality of the ride (which I'm sure is exceptional), but I have to say that is one of the ugliest wooden coasters I have ever seen. It looks as though almost no thought went into the design of the actual structure, with wood going in all different directions with no rhyme or reason. Not that looks are everything, but Balder definitely doesn't have the structural beauty of, say, Lightning Racer or Rampage.
