Attack of the Abbreviations

Well, if this comes across rude, you will get over it! Seriously though if you want to 'play the game' so to speak, you have to learn the language.

Part of being a fanatic or whatever involves learning the language. I agree, some are hard, but you willl catch on easily. I do however think it is dumb for people to abbreviate one word coasters, even some 2 worders. But Aslo, i think park names are perfectly fine to abbreviate, as it gets too repetitious to type six flags each time.

I have always wondered what TR:TR means??? I dont mind abbreviations for parks, just type out the coaster name you are talking about.

I went to BGT last week and rode Montu and Kumba.

Its simple.

I agree with scoaster about the six flags abbreviations. It does get annoying.

TR:TR:TR....Tomb Raider: The Ride: Trip Report
But really, how often do people here post abbreviations that are completely unknown? I mean, the *very day* Tomb Raider: The Ride was announced, TR:TR became a part of our lexicon; similarly for S:UF (Superman: Ultimate Flight)

Now I admit, when I write my trip reports (TRs :)) I tend to not use abbreviations without first defining them. But I do that because those may eventually be read by someone with little knowledge of parks who is just looking for a quick overview. But if you are deep in the bowels of the General Forum, chances are likely that you've seen most, if not all of the abbreviations regularly used.

I'll just for example rattle off a list for folks, tell me if there is one you've never seen before:

OrGASM, GASM-II, B:DK, TG:TJC, DD, DDR, MIB:AA, WWPNHC, JTA, B:CTC, MF, SOB, TR, TR:TR, B:TE, B:TR, S:TR, S:TE, S:UE, S:UF, M:TCFKAB, LoCoSuMo, TDZ, LR, BD, KW, PR, ME, ST (wood), ST (steel), V2, etc...

Out of all of those there is only *one* that *might* not be readily recognizable to frequent visitors to this (or the sister GTTP) site. And I'm *sure* that someone will figure it out...(perhaps our floridian timber lover...)

...is it safe to assume, jeremy, that you're referring to DDR:TR....Dudley Do-Right, The Ride....LMAO...

M:TCFKAB got me at first, but I'm one of those "detective-types" that doesn't give up easily...it certainly helps in tracking down the "random acts of data" that I come across in my "work"...

R-Gator - I think DDR could also be Dance Dance Revolution, the arcade game. The one that I'm stumped on is WWPNHC, but I'm sure I'll get it eventually. I'm also very glad to see my own creation, LoCoSuMo, made it on Jeremy's list ;-)

2002 - the year of LoCoSuMo!!

M: TCFKAB = Mantis: The Coaster Formerly Known as Banshee?

I don't get that one either, Mamoosh

chris, don't worry about work, it IS Friday....:)

Woody's obviously not my favorite coaster in the complex, but it usually gets a spin since I have to get Jill to MIB...(I don't think her car has EVER lost - she SPINS the other car seriously)...

and 'moosh, rides get priority when handing out acronyms....ROFL

I *thought* to put both DDR(ride) and DDR (game) up there but decided to leave it ambiguous as a 'spitball' to RGW who gets in a tizzy over the game having that acronym.

And yes WWPNHC is Woody. Obviously not my favorite coaster in the complex either, but it might be #3. It goes: red, blue, red, brown, GREEN (never ridden the flyers)

There are some abbreviations that are generally understood such as names of major parks, however some people abbreviate too many ride names and the names of smaller parks. Common intuition and respect for other readers should tell someone when the use of an abbreviation is appropriate. When I read a post that uses too abreviations for somewhat obscure names, it becomes frustrating to understand what the person is trying to say, and it gives me the impresion that the poster is a bit arrogant to assume that everyone countrywide will understand each abbreviation.
I don't think that this is just an issue on this site. It is something that is infiltrating our culture. Take a look at Text Messaging. I still have yet to figure it out because i don't have a cell phone or anything. Abbreviations are becoming more and more mainstream, and the more we are exposed to them, the more we understand them. It is just a matter of finding the means to learn it. In the first couple of weeks that I was on this site, it took a while to fidure out what the abbreviations meant, and now I understand most of te ones I see right away. (except a few of Jeremy's had me stumped) Though we may not like it, abbreviaitons will become more and more commonplace, and I think that it is easier to learn what they mean and understand them than it is to complain about them. just my $0.02 for today.

Mustang - its *much* easier to complain...reading the forums here should show you that ;-) BTW [or, By the way for the abbreviation-challenged] I love your sig...VERY funny.

Agreeing with both sides. I've been watching these forums for a while now, and have caught on to the vernacular. But it was a bit intimidating at first. Now, I get mad when people say SFGA when they mean SFGAm, etc. Oh... So these abbreviations are part of the "written" vernacular. Got it. How 'bout our spoken vernacular? I've never heard someone say "I'm going to SFGAm to ride B-colon-TR." Or am I just hanging out at the wrong parks?

"Getting on Iron Wolf is kind of like going in a blender and pressing PUREE"

Maybe not bee-colon-tee-are, but I *have* heard so-called enthusiasts refer to S:UE simply as "sue" and S:ROS @ SFNE as "ess-are-owe-ess-at-ess-eff-en-eee".

At first, I didn't know what TA2K meant.

(It means Thrust Air 2000, referring to S&S Power's air-launched coasters.)
