Are Water Coasters - coasters?

This is not meant as a debate, but I was wondering if people think rides like Journey To Atlantis are a coaster?

I think they are!

I think they are too. I can see arguments both ways... But face it, the last part of the ride (before the final splash down that is) you are pulled up a lift hill and then you are on rails and you are using gravity as your method of propulsion. It also uses that movement as a way to "thrill) (including that little "wicked" twisting drop that starts off in the dark). To me, that is a coaster!

Its all in your opinion I guess. Most web sites do not count it as a coaster / water coaster, and even Sea World considers it a water ride, which it primarily is.

Probably get some disagreement on this one though.

I'm not familiar with Atlantis, but I would say that the Premier Ride's model is most certainly a coaster. It looks like a lot of fun, kind of a gigantic wild mouse meets flume sort of thing.

My personal view is that if it floats for the majority of the ride (IE, is not physically attached to the rails) then it is a water ride, regardless of the drops / how you get up the lift. Then again, I'm not fond of water rides in the first place.

When I first looked at Journey to Atlantis, I thought the same thing... this is a water ride. However, after riding it and that wild run on the rails, I changed my opinion to "coaster". True, for the first part of the ride and at the very end you are floating... flume like. However, when you hit the top of the second main drop and are in the dark, you are doing turns that seem just short of Wild Mouse type turns, and when you hit that final drop, it can rival many small to even mid sized steel coasters. From the top of that second main lift to the bottom of the main tracked dropp to the splash down right before the ending, you are on coaster tracks with no water around.

In my mind its more of a coaster than those torture devices known as Chance Tobbogans, and most (myself included... but only regretably so) consider them coasters. *** This post was edited by SLFAKE on 4/5/2001. ***
Poseidon at Europa I think is a coaster as it has a few swooping good drops and banked turns before any splash down. It has a lift, and it coasts, so if you ask me they are coasters!

Yes...if it coasts, it is a coaster. Heck, I even consider the Casey Jr. Train at Disneyland a coaster! It has a lift hill and coasts through the second half of the ride. It's fun too!

Decisions determine destiny; Destiny determines decisions.
Definitely! Runs on rails/ uses gravity/ lift hill/ thrill ride/ coasts- It's a coaster! More of a coaster than a bobsled IMHO.

It really is fun! I think of it as half a log flume, half a roller coaster.

When most log flumes start their course through the ride, they are in water. However, since it is pretty dark in that area, you can't tell it is actually running on it's rails instead of above water. It does the same thing throughout other parts of the ride to make you think you are actually above water when you are not. So I think it's actually on it's track (with no water) more than it is running on water. Just something I thought I'd bring up.

That room you are flying through (with all those candles) before that "big surprise coaster finale" is one of my favorite parts! It picks up a lot of speed and leads right into that winding drop. Very fun. Oh yes, I consider it a roller coaster. :)

And also, don't forget the water coaster that CAN not be debated as "non-coaster" - The Nickelodeon Flying Super Saturator at Carowinds!

The Jet Coaster ROARS!
People seem to think it is a coaster, so why is it not in the database???
