Any Canobie people out there?

I remember going on field trips to Canobie back in junior high for end of school trips. Man that seemed so long ago when it's only been six years. I'm in college now and I still go back. The Yankee Cannonball is so smooth now. The airtime you get on that thing is incredible. I remember riding the Galaxy all the time as a kid. I also remember being so excited walking to the park entrance seeing the ferris wheel and log ride on the way. I agree with Touchdown that the log ride and the mine ride are still amongst the best out there...espcially for a park over 100 years old. Canobie is where my coaster and amusement park enthusiam began.

TOP 5
1. Alpengeist, 2. Magnum XL-200, 3. Superman: Ride of Steel (SFNE), 4. Nitro, 5. Volcano: The Blast Coaster
Close Calls 1. Apollo's Chariot, 2. Grizzly (PKD), 3. Medusa (SFGAdv)

I don't think anyone has mentioned Canobie's Catterpillar. That is my favorite "antique" flat ride next to any carousel. The cover still works, and riding it is like going back in time. I love the creaking and croaking when the cover goes up and down. My mother, now 58, remembers riding it as a child, and that makes it fun too, knowing that generations have enjoyed that ride. It's not just a fun ride or a rare old ride, but it's a ride with character, sounds, sights, and an overall sense of happiness surrounds it. Everyone giggles on that ride.
I like canobie alot and I plan to go there when it opens in may. The reason I like the park is that during the spring it is never really busy and so I usually go 3-5 times around on the corkscrew and 2-3 times around on the log ride( the same with the other rides). The cannoballl was closed at the beginning of last year and so i was disappointed but that made up for it when I found out the S&S tower was open.

Coasterbuzz: Where it's okay to scream like a girl

Gardener, earlier in this thread I not only mentioned the caterpillar but I asked if there was another one in existence. Does anyone know if there is another one at any other park?
Hi Steel Force. Sorry I overlooked your earlier inquiry about the caterpillar. I did a quick search, and ridezone.com states the following locations for caterpillars:

Bland's Amusement Park, Tipton, PA*

Camden Park, Huntington, WV

Canobie Lake Park, Salem, NH**

Idlewild Park, Ligonier, PA**

Myrtle Beach Pavilion, Myrtle Beach, SC**

Valleyfair, Shakopee, MN

* This ride is inside a building

**These rides have the operating canopy

Perhaps other readers can confirm if this list is up to date. I have only ridden the one at Canobie Lake, and I can say that they do a fine job maintaining all of their classic rides.

Idlewild's website claims that there are only three caterpillars operating in North America and that only two of them have operating canopies. That would mean that Idlewild's and Canobie Lake's are the two with working canopies, but where is the third?
I love seeing the paratroopers ride, caterpillar ride, and all the other rides over at that section of the park from the skyride. It's a short skyride but it offers a different view of the park. I always drop a coin in the fountains too.

Im the #1 Canobie Lake Park Fan!!!These are my top 3 coasters:
1. S:RoS @ SFNE 2. Yankee Cannonball 3. Cyclone/B:TDK

I live about 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Canobie and love it. Sadly I haven't been there in two years but I would like to go this year to go for a spin on the Yankee Cannonball. This coaster is amazing for its size. I would also like to try the new S&S Tower. Canobie is awesome yet I don't go there much cause I just rather ride S:RoS @ SFNE.

3-Yankee Cannonball

Would someone care to explain what a cattepilar ride is? As you can see from the list, our cattepillar count is a little bit short on the west coast. :)

Actually, our classic flat ride count as a whole is very much lacking out here!

Xcelerator- Put the Pedal to the Metal!

Canobie Lake was the park I visited every summer growing up in MA just south of NH. It is a great park with a mix of old classics with some new rides tossed in. The park is always a few years behind the latest ride...and it is part of its charm. The Pirate Ship can seat 5 across each row...not like some of the smaller versions. I remember as a kid (this really dates me...) people at one end would shout "tastes great" and the other side would respond "less filling".

They always maintain the rides, it is clean, with lots of trees/shade. SFNE has taken some biz away...especially in the corporate summer BBQ family day area.

Are the rumors of the Round Up being removed true?

Hi CoasterFanMatt. The Caterpillar is a great old (antique?) flat ride. I believe Canobie's and Idlewild's are from the 1940's. You can find out all about them at ridezone.com if you follow the link for "rides" at the bottom of the page and click on "Caterpillar." They were once very common, and they are still tons of fun although rare rides.
The Caterpillar is kind of an adult kiddie ride. It is almost like a Himalaya except when it hits full speed, a canopy covers the entire ride, making it look like a giant caterpillar. When I was a kid and too small to ride it, my mother took my cousin on it, and when the cover went over them, I freaked out thinking my mother had disappeared........Ahhh the memories.
