Animatronic dinosaur catches fire at Kings Island

Posted | Contributed by CoasterDaddy

One of the animatronic dinosaurs at Kings Island's new "Dinosaurs Alive" exhibit caught fire around 8:40 p.m. Spokesman Don Helbig said Wednesday morning that the dinosaur that burned was the Ruyang Yellow River dinosaur, the main attraction of the exhibit.

The plume of smoke in the video looks pretty big just for one dinosaur.

The synthetic rubber skin that is used on these create a lot of smoke when ignited. I'd wager that there was some welding being done on the frame. The example of these figures that I have seen personally use pneumatic cylinders controled by low voltage solinoid valves, so I wouldn't think that it would have been electrical in nature.

Whoops.

Think anyone's losing their job on this one?

We're still opening on time...without the self-described main attraction of the exhibit. $5 please.

I would actually pay the $5 if there were dinosaurs on fire when I walked through.

After speaking with Don last Saturday, he told me that it will take about 50 minutes to walk through the entire exhibit. So, It may be the main attraction, but I doubt it will affect the over all experience to much. Especially since I'm sure they're working diligently to fix/replace it.

That seems rather long for a "show" at an amusement park. I mean, I wouldn't want a $5 up-charge show to last 10 minutes, but nearly an hour, not including time spent waiting in line, seems like a pretty big chunk of time.

Less people in lines for the coasters, so I don't care if it took even longer. :)

I'm sure you can go through at your own pace. I don't think it will be like a haunted house where your waiting for the people in front of you to move on. The path is pretty wide. Some people may take longer others may go through quicker.

What I wonder is if once you pay the $5 can you come and go throughout the day. If not, I'm wondering if there will be bathrooms and/or concessions inside.

Seeing as how it will take a decent chunk of time our of your riding day, it wouldn't surprise me if this ends up being visited more by pass holders and less by ticket buying guests.

If it is visited by passholders, I am guessing it will only be once.

I was very excited about DA till I started to actually see them up-close. Now I am just meh on the whole thing.

Before you can be older and wiser you first have to be young and stupid.

I'm fairly certain this collection of dinosaurs is the same that was at Brookfield Zoo near Chicago a few years ago. If it is here is what the burning dinosaur might have looked like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mulford/3867865133/in/set-72157622053728393

A thread about a fire at KI and no snide remarks about SOB?

I, for one, am shocked and offended!

Mulf, it may be similar to the attraction in Chicago. But, Don did say it's is larger than anything done before. He also mentioned to me that it is a long term capital investment that they plan to grow over the years.

This discussion is about plastic dinosaurs, not metaphorical ones...

+1!

That one had me laughing pretty good. This is just too easy a topic.

Gonch uses his Photoshop superpowers to save the day again!

And here I was expecting it to be a picture of Kinzel on fire.

Nah. Too many trees in the background (though that being said, I'm not sure where they have put this attraction... I'f it's over by Son of Beast and Top Gun, then definitely, too many trees...
