I think you grossly underestimate how lazy people can be.When I was an R.A. in college, I had to rounds a few times a night, including one after 2 a.m. After the round, you had to write it in the log book. I rarely walked the building on that late round. I just went down and signed the book and went to bed.
...And yet you can't understand why they put a @#$! switch at the top of the ride to prevent the mechanic from doing his inspection the same way you did your late rounds? :)
Oh...on some rides, the remote key switches have to do with making sure that someone is in a position to *see* the train that is about to start moving.
Joe E.: one of the problems is that the area of the ride being worked on is that while the area being worked on is not itself necessarily a kill zone, access to that area gives you access to a kill zone. CP relies on its mechanics to have a good sense of what's where on the ride and to keep from getting killed. But don't believe for one moment that it will prevent OSHA from citing them for a lockout violation if something goes wrong!

Thats the thing, they can just run up there, push the button and come back.
Further, I doubt they are qualified to do so.
