The first drop does have brakes. It's these weird "side friction" brakes with big piston like things on the sides of em. Are they still there? I just rode it last month, but didn't "study" it like I used to
Well this is the first I have heard of this. I know Eagle USED to have brakes on the first drop. These were used to set up the trains for racing (and additionally to let riders really feel how high they were, scaring the schitt out of them in the process). But those brakes are LONG GONE (though the brackets remain as you can see in the 3rd pic down on this page http://home.attbi.com/~geoff2222/sfgam/eagle.html ). But those are the only brakes I've ever known about. Anybody else heard of this?

it still has a great first drop (with no braking) unlike a certain other massive woodie in Sandusky.
I know this is off topic, but I gotta throw a couple cents in about that other massive woodie. How could a coaster be braked not once, but three times (when I rode in Aug '00) on the FIRST DROP?! Hands down the most disappointing coaster ever for this enthusiast.
I feel better....agreed that the Eagle is one of the best woodies out there. Its first drop is almost as good as they get, and when I rode it held speed very well except for the helix. My only complaints would be that the brakes nearly stopped the trains before the helix (and thus sapped the excitement out of what might have been a Beast-like element) and that it was hardly ever racing that summer. Too bad they hadn't started running a train backwards yet....calls for another trip in the near future. But I'd take the Eagle over plenty of other more popular woodies.
