Adventureland Review

Looks like I'll be packaging this movie with one, or two others over the upcoming weekend. Maybe I'll marathon it with Haunting in Connecticut, Duplicity, and whichever new flick also starts on Friday.

You do that too, phan? I used to go see one movie a month until I started getting a little busier a few years ago. I don't go nearly as much, but when I do go I'll see two or three. Of course, I only do that if no one else is with me, because no one else like to see that many movies in a row.

Great review Skydiving Jeff, by the way. I write movie reviews in my local paper sometimes. Have you ever been published? you should.

I'm going to go see Adventureland when it comes out this week.

There's a theater in Pittsburgh (not far from Kennywood, actually) that shows movies for 99 cents. They're usually showing stuff about a month before it comes out on DVD, but it's cheaper than renting. Also, Tuesdays are $1 popcorn and BYOB night :) .

Hi

We have something like that in Huntington, WV. They charge $2 and have show movies that aren't in regular theaters anymore, but haven't made it to DVD yet either. It's always fun to catch a flick that you may have missed for only $2.

LostKause, thanks for the compliment. I haven't gotten anything published in any major or local publications, but I did write for and later run my college magazine/newspaper. Back in my freshman year I would write movie reviews just about every week -- the local Cinemark was practically my second home. I miss it a great deal, would love to continue writing in some capacity again (provided there's a decent audience there to read it).

I don't think many people will notice Phantom's Revenge isn't supposed to be there besides us geeks or Kennywood locals. ;)

That's funny that you bring your own salt shaker! I never thought of that since I don't really care for the crap they use in theatres. I like my seasoned and garlic salt! I will remember that next time. :) I am always bringing my own soda and snacks, though. It's pretty easy when Wal-Mart and a dozen fast foods are within walking distance. ;)

We go to the same theater, Tina...lol.

I'll take my own candy sometimes, just because I don't like what they offer. Lately, I've been finding myself putting quarters in the candy machine at the theater to buy "Skull and Bones" candy. I buy a lot of it too. I ask for a small cup to put it all in, and I usually spend about three or four dollars on it...lol.

Our dollar theater is usually $1 for a movie but on Monday nights it's $1.50 for 3 tickets. When my wife and I go, we buy 3 and throw one out since it's still cheaper than buying two.

I can honestly say that, I have never told any of my friends, "Dude, I can see your Goobers from here."

The Rotten Tomatoes community is currently giving Adventureland a 76%.

...Which, I'd like to add for those who don't frequent RT, means that the movie is good, or "a fresh tomato". If it's under 60%, it's supposedly rotten.

I highly recommend RT. I really don't think there are many people online who don't know about it by now.

The Fresh/Rotten ratings are only applied using an average of community reviews and critic reviews, right? There aren't any critic ratings yet (or weren't this afternoon) so I don't know how fresh/rotten that would actually make the film.

LostKause's avatar

Wow! I just noticed that the T-Meter critic rating is at 85%! That's a good score!

I have always been under the impression that the score is based on the T-Meter average. I don't think that community reviews have anything to do with it, and is offered only to compare.

They won't give the movie a score until a certain amount of T-meter critics have reviewed the film. I forget the exact number, but I believe it's something like 8 or 10.

There are plenty of critic reviews out there. Google News it.

I have never had an employee say anything about my "contraband." LOL! Then again I don't make it that obvious. What would they say to you anyway? ;)

Carrie M.'s avatar

They might say, "If you didn't bring enough for everyone, then you can't have it!"... Wait, no, that was elementary school contraband... Crap! I don't know! ;)

The NYT review was: "a better movie than you'd expect." Which, depending on what you were expecting, means it might not live up to your expectations. ;)

Seeing as I was an employee at an amusement park in the late 80s (not all that far from Kennywood) I'm interested to see the movie. Back then we use to joke about the idea that the "drama" of summer jobs would make for a good movie. Somebody beat me to the punch.

I saw the movie yesterday and thought it was about what I expected. The acting and dialog was pretty weak, and the plot was paper thin. However, they did an alright job at portraying some aspects of life as an amusement park employee. I saw it with a friend who worked at CP with me, and we were drawing a lot of parallels between the movie and real life.
