Adults are greedy grown-up thrill hungry children!

I have seen several discussion about how spoiled the GP and coaster enthusiasts are about new rides and attractions. It seems people just keep wanting more and more...some have concluded that we have just been getting spoiled over the last few great coaster years.

That notion i would say is very incorrect, the GP and coaster enthusiast have always been greedy, testament to this idea is a quote from Fred thompson the brillant creator of Luna Park at Coney island. I was doing some research on him for my big history paper and passed by an interesting quote from him in 1910.

"their tendencies are constantly changing. these grown-up children want new toys all the time. They are thrill-hungry and insatiable." From Kid of Coney Island, great book definitely worth reading.

Thompson was a genius who knew the consumer well, he knew they needed a new attraction every year, even back in 1910. So the next time someone critisizes a coaster enthusaists for wanting a new coaster to be built every year or so, just remember it is only human nature, or the nature of a grown-up kid to want some new toys.

Good point. Back then even, they knew how to keep it fresh. Also, remember that Luna had to compete with Steeplechase and Dreamland, both within a few blocks walking distance.

The competition at coney was incredible. The competition alone spurred all the parks to build such innovative and expensive rides.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Today, people voice their opinions in the net, when I was a kid, it was CB radio.  One hundred years ago, postcards and word of mouth.

"I heard from my uncle's friends's cousin's former roomate that the Coney Island Cyclone is going to open for Christmas!"

The difference now is with the internet, people are more familiar with what is out there, and everyone wants their own park to get the "biggest, baddest, bestest". It doesn't matter what a park does to improve itself, there will always be whiners out there complaining that it wasn't good enough. But I think most people will agree, the younger you are, the louder you complain, and it's always been like that. It's the younger people who change the world. The older you get, the more selective you get in what you complain about. You learn with time what is more important in life.
