I just found out on Facebook that Mike passed in his sleep this morning. Rest In Peace, Michael Gallagher.

This is heartbreaking. Mike was such a great guy. I'm thankful that I was able to have an extended conversation with him a little over 2 weeks ago and despite his considerable struggles he was communicative and very much in the moment. Not a religious person, I was still hoping for a miracle. However, it was clear from the subsequent posts on Facebook that he was on a steadily downhill course. Diabetic neuropathy is a terrible affliction but it should never have come to this. I feel privileged to have known him and am now going to have a good cry. RIP, my friend.

Didn't know Mike personally, but it's clear from posts here and on FB that he touched a lot of lives. As I get older and know more people dealing with illness and death, it becomes clear that the "legacy" you leave behind is in the people you meet and influence, and in the lives you touch in your too-short time on this planet.
RIP Mike, and Godspeed.
