Posted | Contributed by Jeff

American Coaster Enthusiasts announced Thursday the donation of $10,000 to Conneaut Lake for the purpose of renovating the Blue Streak roller coaster, which has been idle since 2006. The park needs $100,000 to complete the renovation and get it operating.

Get the sense I'll be pissed? Didn't I outright say I would? I didn't suggest you said I have to care. I don't even understand what point you're trying to make. If it's that, "If you don't care, don't worry about it," well, that'll never happen. If people didn't share their opinions, we'd have no forum.

I'm sure that Pepsi has a pre-qualification that proposals must go through in the application process to determine whether they meet the guidelines. I'm sure there are thousands of submissions that don't make the grade. There are categories dedicated to health, education, arts and culture, etc. Not every dime of every charity has to be raised for your personal pet cause. Pepsi decided this meets their criteria, and since it's their money being donated, they get to decide what's worthy to include.

I get that, and I'm not saying it shouldn't be on there. My point is, there are other ways that *I choose to vote.

You can now also get in an extra vote every day by texting 100510 to 73774

IF you have free texting, it's free to you. Blue Streak is up to 17th place. It only has to get to 10th place.

See I thought that being a fan of something involved some kind of feeling and emotions. Sounds to me like something said for the sake of argument, because your feeling and emotion about the whole thing is the opposite. Quite a strange viewpoint to take....."Hi I run a roller coaster/amusement park fan site, but my site has no feeling or emotion. In fact, I'm hoping that a coaster gets torn down and it's park closed soon." It's one thing to "state the truth" and comment on it. It's another to do nothing and pretty much campaign against it when the cheapest, easiest opportunity ever to help presents itself, and I really can't think of any kind of half-principle that a true fan could stand on to support the argument against giving them other people's money.

I don't have big emotional ties to Blue Streak or Conneaut Lake. I do however, want to see the park carry on. I am a fan of amusement and theme parks...pure and simple, and I would rather have a fledgling amusement park than yet another half empty, cookie cutter housing development, or another mall with the same 10 stores as all the rest of them. Preserving a place like Conneaut Lake doesn't just keep the park open for the future and a classic roller coaster open, it's a small victory in preventing the further homogenization of the amusement park industry, and ultimately our country. There are some pieces of our history that should be kept alive in the face of "progress", and I think that Conneaut Lake is one of them.

While I agree that they are in bad shape, I disagree with the notion that it can't be fixed and should be put down. I think that they can get things going again. I think that they need to change a few things within their business plan, leadership, and direction of the company, but there is still a pulse. They'll never get anywhere though if they don't have the money to get started. Dropping the whole business armchair quarterback vibe and voting for a multibillion dollar conglomerate to give them 50K never hurt anyone. It's surely no more of a waste than most of the other programs in the running.

They only made it to 14 last month, but a new round has started, and they are #2 as of 8/5.

If I were donating $50K personally, I could think of about 100 different places it would go before CLP (for a whole bunch of reasons). Since there are limited prizes, my votes will go to things that I think are more worthwhile, regardless of what anyone thinks of my "true fandom."

Well, it makes about as much sense as continuing to post on a fan site you apparently can't stand. But then again, for as long as I've been posting here, the "site" has never spoken a word to me. It's funny how you can quote it that way. ;)

It's one thing to "state the truth" and comment on it. How has anyone campaigned against the initiative? I haven't seen/heard anything like that. In fact, the campaign got an indirect plug on the podcast just by the very nature of us talking about it.

Which would make a lot of sense if the issue in question was closing a thriving CLP just so another business could take its place. That's not the case here at all. As far as I know there are no businesses lined up to take its place. The only question at hand is how long CLP will be allowed to drain monetary resources from multiple places in order to stay "operating."

While I agree that they are in bad shape, I disagree with the notion that it can't be fixed and should be put down. I think that they can get things going again. I think that they need to change a few things within their business plan, leadership, and direction of the company, but there is still a pulse.

And that's the biggest misunderstanding. There is no pulse. CLP has been on monetary life support for years. It's not sustaining on its own. That circumstance cannot continue forever in any context in my opinion.

They'll never get anywhere though if they don't have the money to get started. Dropping the whole business armchair quarterback vibe and voting for a multibillion dollar conglomerate to give them 50K never hurt anyone. It's surely no more of a waste than most of the other programs in the running.

The "we just need help to get started" argument has been issued for several years now. They have not been able to demonstrate the ability to function with any amount of help. History has proven the opposite in fact.

We've had this discussion before, and it's not just "Carrie's opinion"...IMO... ;)

As a business model, a "labor of love" is unsustainable. The future comes, and the succeeding owner/operators find they just don't have the desire to continuously pump time, money, and energy into a business that AT BEST could break even. (And based on the past ten years or so, I don't think CLP is doing even that well).

You would! I suppose you want Carrie to be forever your girl? I suppose anything can happen...opposites attract, you know. Nah...I doubt she'd be spellbound by the likes of you.

Straight up, Clint...I think you were just being mean. Let's hope the promise of a new day will bring a nicer you!

(Did I rush rush my reply?)

Well, I'd reply using another song by Paula Abdul, but I think you covered them all.
