24-Hour coaster record challenged to raise money for charity

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

A group of four is attempting to ride 72 coasters in 24 hours to raise money for Children's Miracle Network. The team, which includes a vice president of Clear Channel Entertainment, one of the largest owners of radio stations in the US, arranged for helicopter support and cars to hit most of the large parks in the Mid-Atlantic.

HA! good luck with seventy two, the other team only got forty, how are they gonna get almost twice that? again, HA!

I have half a notion to head out to HersheyPark tomorrow morning just to be there for the end of an event like this.

Anyone who can ride such a large number of coasters in a day has earned a record. But records set using different methods are deserving of their own categories. A helicopter, the fantasy vehicle of all big-city commuters, changes the possibilities of such a record. Records done without flight should be counted separately.

Then by the same logic -- if I can ride all of CP's coasters in one day and have the physical endurance to do a "supermarathon" run to SFO and ride those before 24 hours is up, I should get my own classification because I didn't use any vehicle to set the record.

Or I could bike there and not have used a combustion engine. The possibilities are endless.

These are a good group of guys who aren't out looking for the pub. More power to them. I hope they set the bar high enough that the GRP crew has no shot of regaining the record.

i think helicoptors are cheating, its not a fair win because everyone else DROVE at like 50mph, not fly at 115mph, thats CHEATING!

Noone ever said how to move from park to park.

It's not "cheating" -- the only "rules" here are laws, and last I checked, with proper airspace clearance helicopters aren't illegal!

That is really wrong they may be coaster fans but they are doing it for chairty there not cheaters and you dont know all the guiness rules and also "Guarno and Spivak each contacted the American Coaster Enthusiasts club. The men, both 38, were put in touch with each other by David Escalante, a California man who was among the record-setters."-lehigh valley news

If the guy who holds the record doesnt care i dont!
Guarno and Spivak would have found each other anyway. Once Spivak was on board with the project, the local radio station here did some pretty good PR for this group, and they easily found 2 more people to shell out the bucks to participate (with their entry $$ going directly to the CMN).

Nice for Escalante that he somehow gets ACE's name in this quest again, but neither he nor the group was integral to this challenge.

Very funny piece about Clear Channel. I don't like the bastards either for making local radio so boring I can't listen to it anymore. That began when I was still a jock at the former top-40 station in Cleveland. We can thank the idiots in Congress last decade who were so high on the idea of deregulating everything that they never stopped to ask how lifting radio ownership limits would be a good thing. (There was a time when a company could only own one station per market and not reach more than a certain percentage of the entire US population. The regulation was considered reasonable because of the scarcity issue regarding available radio station frequencies.)

The group is at Knoebel's as I type this. They've finished there and are on their way to HersheyPark (approx. 25 minute trip). They've already obliterated the record and have ridden 66 coasters. Nine more at Hershey (LR counting as 2) will give them SEVENTY FIVE!

Just a quick note - As you all know, the money that they are raising goes to the Children's Miracle Network. If you'd like to make a donation, please call 1-877-CMN-2647

It's over! They're done! 75 coasters in 24 hours. At the end of the marathon, they presented a check to CMN for $41,850.
Thats great. I am happy they got the record and they did it for a good cause. I don't understand some of you people calling them cheaters. They are doing it for a good cause which is more than GRP did so back off from calling them cheaters.

The people calling them cheater are probably from Cali and want the record to stay in their state.
