2001: Great Coasters, No Records

2001's new coaster list is full of interesting unique designs that don't really seem to be record-setting. There are some new innovations this year like the Arrow 4D, Vekoma's Super-Invertigos, and Hypersonic XLC. Apart from those, most of the new coasters for this year are not record-breaking like last year. Examples: Talon, Nitro, Wildfire, Cornball Express.

Are record-breaking coasters better than smaller ones with more original designs? Can enthusiasts be content with riding coasters that are for the most part smaller than others?

Most coaster's built are not record breaker's.

Umm.. X is the largest "flying" coaster, Deja Vu's are now tallest inverteds (1ft taller than Alpie). Also, Colossos is the tallest & fastest woodie coaster in Europe. Can't think of any more.

Hypersonic is the greatist acceleration.
Hypersonic is the only coaster to use compressed air to power it. It is the only coaster to go straight up and then straight down. Hypersonic is also the only coaster whose vehicles are aircraft tires. It is also really fun!

Who needs record setters when we have the likes of Raven, Timber Wolf, Roar, etc. Keep building those great "woodies" and stop worrying about the height and speed plateaus. I wish you all had the chance to ride the Lincoln Park COMET, what a great ride at only 65 - 70 feet.
Originallity is better than record-breakers. Why is the Kennywood Thunderbolt better than Gemini? Bigger is not always better. And yes Gemini was the tallest coaster when it was built in the late 70's.

Yup....execution and design are good things.

But I like going way up high too. (:

Decisions determine destiny; Destiny determines decisions.
Cornball Express is sort of a record breaker. It's the first coaster that goes into another coaster's supports that actually hold the track. A smaller record, but it is true.

I guess I was a little unclear. When I think of record-breaking, I tend to think of height, speed, length, and number of inversions. Perhaps I should rephrase the question.

Are taller, faster, longer, loopier coasters better than smaller ones with more original designs?

Sorry for the confusion.

Not necessarily, E.J.!

In fact, Kennywood's Thunderbolt is my #1 coaster overall.

I agree wholeheartedly. :)

Records are such a fickle thing, and it seems like people are trying to make them up all the time. I could say that Wildfire is the tallest coaster in Missouri with five inversions, or that Mean Streak is the only wooden coaster in Ohio with a drop of exactly 155'...

I think that we sometimes try to overanalyze the coasters instead of just enjoying the ride. While I love hypercoasters, I'd rather have a ride with a well-planned course that is creative as opposed something built just for a number. So I encourage everyone to savor each coaster for what it is rather than worrying about what records it does and does not hold.

I think that most enthusiasts don't really care about records. I know I don't. Case in point: Psycho Mouse. I went to a media event last Friday for Psycho Mouse and myself and the other enthusiasts that were there were having a blast! On just a simple little mouse coaster. That's what this is all about, not which coaster has the tallest loop or fastest speed. Sure, we all LOVE to ride the record breakers, but I think for the most part that we just love to ride. Period. That's my take on the matter. Peace. :)

While Rugrats Runaway Reptar at PKi is a record holder for the first inverted coaster for kids, I find it an extremly fun little ride that is very enjoyable. It goes great with the theming of that area of the park too. Coasters don`t have to be record breakers to be good, but if a park builds a record breaker, than the genereal public willl want to see it, and that means they generate more money!
I totally agree with The Rentch. To me,it doesn't matter what record a coaster holds,as long as i have fun riding it who cares!I think every coaster i have ever been on has done something unique for me no matter how painful, short or uncomfortable,i have always gotten off a coaster and been thankful someone dumped out the cash to build it.

Yes, if you don't count the all time tallest shuttle, Superman The Escape. Wait, is this going to start another war? I can never tell! :)

"Don't you hate pants?"
OK, so Deja Vu is the tallest looping shuttle. It's also the tallest and fastest shuttle that uses lifts. It's also the tallest inverted shuttle. It's the tallest and fastest coaster made by Vekoma. It's the only shuttle that crosses over itself.

My position has always been with Jeff and The Rentch. Ride 'em for the fun of it whether or not they have records. If you wanted to, you could make up a record for every single roller coaster in the world. Take for example Yankee Cannonball at Canobie Lake. It's the tallest and fastest roller coaster in New Hampshire!

My 200th post! WOO HOO!
