UPDATED: Hersheypark announces unnamed Intamin rocket coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Hersheypark today announced the 2004 addition of an Intamin hydraulic launch coaster. The ride will send riders from 0 to 72 mph in about two seconds. The ride will stand 150 feet tall and feature a 180-foot drop. It will also have a 135-foot "cobra loop" and barrel rolls. It has not yet been named, but the public can vote to choose a name.

Go to the official Hersheypark site or read the press release.

I don't buy into this whole "Hershey builds family rides" idea... while I agree that the majority of Hershey's rides are "family-friendly", the park is definitely not without thrill rides.

Great Bear, while being one of the "milder" inverts around, is definitely not the kind of ride that I would bring a small child on (nor would I expect a small child to want to ride it.) Tidal Force was the largest splashdown ride when it was constructed and isn't exactly something that I can see the entire family (little ones and all) taking a spin on. And how can you even consider Wildcat to be "mild?" That ride beats the living crap out of you!

While its not exactly Six Flags, I fail to see how Hershey caters to families and nothing but families, and how this new coaster doesn't fit in their collection.

I found it rather interesting that despite all of these elements, it still has 200 less feet of track than TTD. About the load/unload stations, I wouldn't think that that'd be necessary with only 2 trains on a moderately long ride. About the paint scheme, maybe there's some weird requirement by Intamin that rocket coasters have to be red, because we have yet to see a different track color (unless you count TTD's short strips of white track).

BTW, I voted Renegade.

Now with three rocket coasters in existence, at least they didn't follow Cedar Point's lead and name this one "3rd best thrill renegade" or "3rd biggest thrill storm runner". Hey, why didn't Knott's just go with "Next best thrill excellerator?" ;)
Okay, first of all, Renegade is the best name ever. Second, whats up with that animation? Where are all of the elements that it says are there, and whats a "Flying Snake Dive." Other than that, the ride looks great. Can't wait...

Top 10: Ride of Steel (SFNE), Millennium Force, Batman (SFGAm), GhostRider, Raging Bull, Goliath, X-Flight, SUF (SFGAm), The Boss, Riddler

This ride looks great! I like the oddly twisting rise into the final brake run.. different than any banking I've seen built so far.

Thanks Hersheypark! I can't wait to visit next summer!

Thats not what I mean Jeff.

Take into account that a coaster like this with a conventional lift would be whatever the lift lenght would plus the 2600 feet the ride already is.

While a lift would not add any lenght if you cut out the launch and top hat, it would not be non stop action like it will be as a rocket.

I guess what I am saying is that 60 seconds of ride this nuts woudd be akin to a convential coaster with a length CLOSER to 4000 feet. How long is Raptor's ride time from the time it drops from the lift to the time it hits the brakes?

If given the choice I'd choose a hamburger over a hotdog anyday of the week.

MagnumForce: It takes approximately 1:10 from the time the train comes off of the lift until it hits the brake run.

UTUKM, the animation has ALL the elements, there, which ones do you think are missing? And a Flying Snake dive is the dive after the barrel roll, its the same thing as the dives on Flashback at SFMM.

Let's just say....the birds will be jealous.

Hey to all! Long time reader, first time poster. I was just wondering does anyone have a link to pics of the layout or something. As for the name I voted for Renegade.
I think that storm what ever is bad b/c it doesn't match any of the rides or themes in the park; i think that renegade is too off the beaten track, so to speak.

Even know there are so many coasters with steel in them, i chose the steel stampede, because if you look around the western themed area there are all of those dead bull heads.

i think i have good logic because i have been to the park over 30 times in the 16 years of my life.

Must...visit...Hershey...

I like renegade the best

Um.....ok you people obviously forgot how small Hersheypark is. I'm surprised they can fit something like that in! I'm so glad thou that they are adding something so great to the park. I agree with the color. Why RED? I would pick brown or black or something to make it fit with the theme. The trains look OK but i hope they dont bang your head around. I watched the video like 100 times and i can still not figure out where this is going. It obviously going to be near the monorail....hehehe. Hersheypark is obviously one of the best parks ive been to. I am so sick of all these parks biulding these big ass rides and slaping a name on it with hardly any or NO theming. And you people who say Hersheypark's coasters are......OK are wrong. Go on the WILDCAT....its the most intense ride i have ever been on! And the LIGHTNING RACER is good too. So when you all go to HERSHEYPARK......dont just go on the new ride.......go on them all.
"This is my Heaven...you are my Hell"
Oh and P.S......i dont like any of the names......i would prefere.......................RAGE: the beast is out

Thats the best i could do lol. Its hard thinking of a name lol.

or maybe STAMPEDE by itself would be better

oh well...im goin ta Hershey VERY VERY soon so i am exited

Uh, Drew? You could just edit your posts instead of making four in a row.

Anyway, Hersheypark is going to be soooooo crouded its not going to be funny. I keep hearing things like "I can't wait to head out to Hershey next year, even though I live in California."

Hershey is going to make enough money to buy a second Intamin next year, what with all the swarms coming. Millions, no billions are going to go to hershey for the Storm Runner next year. The queue line will be five hours long or more.
