UPDATED: Hersheypark announces unnamed Intamin rocket coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Hersheypark today announced the 2004 addition of an Intamin hydraulic launch coaster. The ride will send riders from 0 to 72 mph in about two seconds. The ride will stand 150 feet tall and feature a 180-foot drop. It will also have a 135-foot "cobra loop" and barrel rolls. It has not yet been named, but the public can vote to choose a name.

Go to the official Hersheypark site or read the press release.

I've been on California Screemin' which is an Intamin coaster w/ OTSH's on it. Didnt bang my head once, super smooth. If this is anything like that, you'll have airtime & a very comfy ride, even w/ the horse collars.
The heartline roll into the dive looks like a killer combo. This thing should be awesome, especially when you consider the fact that the tophat's going to have a totally straight, totally vertical drop. It's a shame about the OTSRs, but that's a minor nitpick.

I'm going to agree with Moosh & BeastFreak; the color scheme is not attractive to me at all, nor does it seem to go with the "western" theme they're going for. My only other complaint is it's looking a bit short length wise... but hey, I'm a firm believer that if the coaster packs enough of a punch, it could be 17 seconds long *cough* TTD *cough* and still be worth the wait, everytime.

However, said issues the ride might have do not stop it from being the best looking of the rocket coaster bunch, and it really shows the potential these rides have. If the concept is ever truly pushed to its full potential, I could easily see full length rocket mega loopers stealing a good chunk of the looping coaster market from B&M, as could I see a full length rocket hyper topping S:ROS SFNE on coaster polls with frightening regularity. I dunno about you guys... but I can't wait!

Oh and for the record, I voted Renegade.

Golly, I guess I consider 2600' of track and three inversions pretty 'full sized'
It's certainly way beyond the one trick wonders that are Xcelerator and TTD.

I have to say I'm impressed with Hersheypark. They certainly surprised many of us, both by building a 'prototype' and by not wussing out on the layout's length or intensity.
Go, Hershey, go.

This is great! Finally, parks are going to see the potential in these launched coasters. They can do so much more then what most parks make them do.

It looks awesome. I might go as far to say that it has the greatest layout since Drachenn Fire. I'm definately thankful Hershey is only 25 minutes away :)
Ok,I got to the press release, but I don't see anything about voting for the name, or any pictures anwhere!! :(
The horse-collars should not be a problem. Anyone who has ridden the new generation Intamin looping coasters (or any Intamin with horse-collars for that matter) knows that you get 0-head banging. However, there is always a however, with OTSRs, the view point and freedom of the rider is limited.
The Intamin OTSR trains on Colossus at Thorpe are actually quite comfortable, so that doesn't bother me much. I'd still rather see some type of lapbar, though.

Still, this is an interesting choice for Hershey. I can't wait to check it out.

Anyone else notice the supports in the animation for the tophat? Completely different looking stlye. Maybe just done that way for the animation, maybe they realized after the mods to Xcelerator the towers didn't cut it?

Since Dragster's and Xcelerator's trains both had custom styling, is there any idea as to what Hershey's trains will look like? Hope they don't just slap on adapted Colossus trains, though I'm sure they'd be fine.

Wish other parks like Hershey and Dollywood would let the public vote on names. Just hope the coaster trains are theme to that area of the park.
I voted for M:TR. ;) ;) ;)

A day is a drop of water in the ocean of eternity. A week is seven drops.

If Xcelerator is working reliably, then hopefully the less
ambitious speeds that Hershey will be running will make this
a very reliable ride out of the box.

I agree about the color scheme shown in the animation, but
I will point out that they could change it when they build it.

I voted for Steel Stampede. I like alliteration.

Note: The SPEED is what's less ambitious about this coaster.
The layout rocks!!

The ride will shape the name. If it is a good ride, even the worst name will take on new meaning, however, not even the coolest sounding name will make a bad ride better.

Cant wait to ride it!

Every coaster is a labor of love that begins as a gleam in someone's eye!

That's it. I'm going to Hershey next summer.

I put the "D" in DDR.

I love Hershey park and I think this new ride will be AWSOME!!! I like any kind of lauching or looping coaster, but with the two together it should be a sweet ride.

P.S. i voted for Storm Runner

Man, I definitely want to get out to Hersheypark. The only time I went there was when I was too small to ride anything. But now, this park looks really sweet. Those inversions look really good, but I think their color scheme should have gone with their name, or vice versa (sp?). Still, looks like a great addition to Hershey.

Vote Renegade!

I lost my hat on Poison Ivy. How pathetic.

I too applaud Hershey's decision to go relatively smaller, but with a much better layout. This is a much better use of the potential of a launched coaster, rather than just ramming the coaster into the magnetic brakes after the launch. I think this will be better than TTD and Xcelerator - the drop will be great and the elements after the drop look good.

The OTSRs are the only disappointment, and I would have loved some bunny hills, but still a great choice for a fraction of the cost (and, probably, the headaches) of TTD.
