Stranded racoon saved from amusement park tower

Posted | Contributed by raptor6

A racoon was stranded for two weeks atop a 253-foot amusement park tower at Coney Island. Dubbed Rocky by park employees, the raccoon had climbed to the pinnacle of the observation tower two weeks ago and burgled the elevator motor room -- out of fear or an appreciation for the sweeping, 50-mile view of the Atlantic Ocean and four states.

Come on, fhqwgads!

Once again those in the media fail to understand how the natural world works. Was this racoon really stranded? If so, where did it get its food and water for two weeks while no one saw it? Unlike cats, racoons are eaqually skilled at climbing down as well as up. While I am sure it made the "human interest" story angle for many a news room, this story reeks of attributing human thoughts and feelings to a scavenger type animal.

As an avid outdoorsman and observer of nature, I am conjecting that it merely found a peaceful resting place away from all the hubub (I am yet to see a racoon who was afraid of heights). And since racoons are nocturnal, it most likely found its way down at night (when no one would be watching for it) to feast on the food dropped by the park visitors.

The only real danger was that it might entagle itself in the elevator motor and create a mishap of some sort. But full of fear and stranded . . . I don't think so.
