Six Flags Fiesta Texas announces Goliath

Posted | Contributed by Chitown

To drive that message home, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is investing $15 million into a new thrill ride company officials hope will draw even larger crowds to the Northwest Side theme park next year. Next spring, Six Flags plans to open Goliath, which park officials are already billing as the "ultimate inverted roller coaster." Fiesta Texas spokeswoman Sydne Purvis says the new ride will add a powerful new dimension of thrill technology to an already impressive coaster line-up at the San Antonio park. The ride will be made by B&M.

^Yes, I do believe it will matter. Names and themes and landscaping and the overall atmosphere are all part of the guest experience. Some people do come to the park for more than just the rides.

Obviously we can argue about this back and forth forever. And from your history of posts, it appears that is what you like to do. But I'm not going to change your mind and you're not going to change mine.

I agree that overall atmosphere matters - to me it matters more than anything else in the park.

Naming a coaster "Goliath" when it doesn't meet some sort of arbitrary height minimum that coaster enthusiasts have apparently made up isn't going to detract from the atmosphere for me, nor is it for 99.9999% of other guests.

^^^"I'm sure you're joking about the Corona coaster. But there is probably some type of flying creature from Mexican mythology or some type of Mexican bird, that they could have named this coaster after, and it would have fit very nicely into the Los Festivales section--much better than Goliath."

The answer is.... "Quetzalcoatl"

Yes, I *should* be the one naming rides...LOL! ;)

That's a great name gator. Call Shapiro and suggest it to him. If Cedar Point can change a coaster's name, so can Six Flags.
Since six flags is going for family feel, call it Dora the Ride.
^ Or Thomas the Suspended Tank Engine.
Way to go, Batman is still one of the coolest coaster experiences around - especially in the first row :)
I wonder if rides like this have been moved before - after all, this is not a travelling coaster construction, it has loots of specialised footers etc.
The should call it Montu after an even better B&M invert.
This will be the second relocation for this ride.

It originally opened in Japan in 1995, as Gambit at Thrill Valley, where it operated through 2002.

It was moved to and opened at SFNO in 2003.

"Or Thomas the Suspended Tank Engine."

HAHAHAHA!

Thanks Impulse-ive for the complement of my so-so creative ability, but when coming up with that theme for a log flume, I was TRYING to make it goofy. I find it funny that what I came up with is 100 times better theme than what SF came up with here.

Matt., Some of the coaster-riding public WILL notice that a new ride called "Goliath" is not tall nor exceptionally large, especially compared to some of the other rides in the park. I am of the opinion that people are NOT stupid, no matter how they sometimes act.

What if it was a vecoma lolli-swings ride called Goliath?...or a pirate themed Dark Ride called Goliath?

^It's not because of stupidity. I would say it's more along the lines of "who cares"?
I still think it's funny when supposed "enthusiasts" make comments like, "who cares". I guess it doesn't even have to come from an enthusiast to make me laugh. But, why are you members of coaster fan sites if you don't care?

So, names of rides aren't important, eh? If that's the case, why aren't all rides called "roller coaster" or just "ride"? Why do parks copyright ride names so other parks can't take them? I mean, they mean nothing, right? I'm not even sure why people have names. Cuz, you know, "who cares"?

^ Um...

Names aren't important. Unless you know of some names that can make a ride any taller, faster, or better. In which case, I'll eat my pants.

Why not name it The Hang Tree after a western theme.

So I am a supposed enthusiast? Am I supposed to wear coaster shirts, coaster hats, patches, and think the red carpet should be rolled out at a park because I think I am an enthusiast? Should I flash some sort of coaster club membership card to think that I am elite among others that visit a park?

If you are so caught up in the name of a coaster because it doesn't meet your geeky criteria, then you should take a look at more important things in life.

When I said "who cares"? I meant the average part patron not giving the new name of the B&M inverted any other thought. They see a nice new to the park intense inverted coaster and enjoying the ride for what it is.

Don't question my "enthusiast" hobby because you feel a name is so damn important.

Go get laid or something.

Sure, but can the GP pronounce Quetzalcoatl? ;)

Wow, Chitown. Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or what? At least respect the opinion that you disagree with.

Names of coasters do not matter to you. That's great. I accept that, but they mean something to me. I have noticed that when a coaster at a SF park is called Goliath, it means that the ride is big. This new ride is not big, so I take issue with that. It seems lazy and uncreative, as I keep saying.

What's so wrong with that? I accept that you do not care. Do you accept that I do?

^^Greg, they'll learn, after I drill it into their skulls while they watch the video explaining the origin of the name/myth/ride....

Hmmmm, drill, skulls....while we're at it, can we re-name Traumatizer to "Trepanator"?

I think names are important, and boy, calling a 100 foot coaster 'goliath' is kinda lame. Especially at a place that has a few coasters bigger than that.

I think 'Gambit' would be a better name. Even Batman, or since the movie is coming out, and to cash in on merchandising (well guess they're already doing that) "The Dark Knight."

Bottom line right here, the reality of these discussions. So yeah I could choose to just mind my own business and not engage in any activity of this website or any others that are relevant. But I do so because I have an interest in these topics and this industry. However, I cant help but notice how much complaining and idiocy takes place amongst people’s severe negative thoughts about this industry and how significant it comes off as to them. And then someone comes along to voice an opinion with minor knowledge of the situation and gets bashed by some complete nerd for not having all knowledge of the situation. It's America...85% of us are complete idiots and/or put their focus into one thing specific and then it loops right back around to what I just mentioned. The Point is...voicing your opinion is great, but when you bitch about something of this nature utilize common sense...just don’t engage in it to save yourself some frustration and possibly some others. Odds are I'll have my account deleted for using the term "Bitch" in voicing my opinion...but that knowledge in people seems to create power trips, what more could one expect

Yeah, 3 B&M's of the same design in the same state - two of which in the exact same city - does suck. I saw it coming the moment track arrived, most of you probably did. But when an un-experienced CEO is essentially thrown into the position...what would you expect? Nothing will change. What you see occurring is budget cuts. Scraping parts here and there to attempt to 1)save on more expenditures 2)make more money is what they are shooting for. This is the general public the park is aiming...not Acers. If that were the target economy Id imagine there wouldn’t be much of an industry left for some of these major operators. This company isn’t the best...but is making positive moved to procure a continued future.

Just my two cents.
