Michigan's Adventure,... Ticket price increase.

There's nothing strange about it. He's the most ingenious message board troll I've ever seen. The fact that he still gets the number of responses he gets when it's so clear he's trolling for attention is amazing.

Bring me up to speed. I had to park all the way out mid-tighty-whitey-twister and only just got here.

Andy, I just really wanted an excuse to use the dead "whorse" line and didn't dare bring back the Universal haunt thread. Couldn't pass up the opportunity. *laugh*

Call me a troll if you want. but there are others who care about corporations taking advantage of your money. Here are two from Grand Rapids, MI.

A Few years back, there was an Elton John concert at the Van Andel arena, and the concert sold out in 5 minutes. A large portion of the tickets were purchased by a ticket broker, who bought a large portion of front row seats, and then tried to turn around and sell those tickets for $1,250.00 each. the regular ticket price was only $55.00

Elton John discovered that this was happening, and paid back the people who ended up buying those tickets, minus the cost of the original ticket price, and slammed the arena, and ticket master for allowing it to happen.

In relation to the Van Andel. Billy Joel was supposed to do a concert at the Van, and when they learned he was coming, they wanted to charge $200.00 for the tickets. He cancelled, and told the arena to go F themselves. he was not going to allow his fans to be price gouged.

So there are people who do business, who care about you and your money.

I am one of them.

I didn't do it! I swear!!

I won't call you a troll.....I'll call you naive.

P.S. Others behind me might call you troll - I have no power over them.

Orly?

Also, a troll would return more regularly to stir the pot. If you are troll, you're not a very good one.

So the guys that charge $1-2 million a show were worried about price gouging?

$55, that's insane! When is the last time Elton John added a new ride?

slithernoggin's avatar

So let me see if I have this right...

Billy Joel and the Van Andel Arena signed a contract; the Van Andel "found out" Billy Joel was coming (maybe they read the contract they signed?) and just made up prices; Billy Joel cancelled when he found out how much the Van Andel wanted to charge (apparently neither he nor anyone on his team read the contract they signed to see what prices were going to be charged for which tickets).

Troll or not, TR's unique understanding of how business works continues to amuse.

Corporations can't take advantage of my money if I don't give it to them. You sound like Cedar Fair is holding a gun to your head.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

^ This... My thoughts exactly. It's not price gouging if it's directed at expendable income. You don't HAVE TO go to an amusement park. You don't HAVE TO see a concert. If you don't like the price (or don't have the money available), you don't participate. Income is not a protected class in our society.

But then again, what do I know?

slithernoggin's avatar

^^Absolutely. I work in a theater box office and often talk to people who demand a discount because the show is "too expensive" or because they have such a large family or because they don't have a lot of money or because it's a special birthday or.....

...and my inside voice is saying, "It's a stage show; not food, not shelter. You don't want to a) pay the posted price of admission or b) spend 27 seconds Googling the name of the show + discount, don't come complaining to me about the cost."

I read on screamscape a rumor is going around about MA getting a chance mega-lite.That might be why the ticket price is increasing as well as getting camp snoopy

(Insert funny signature here.)

I'm not sure where Elton has been all these years, but ticket brokerage is a legitimate, legal business.

I just bought Bette Midler tickets from Stub Hub which is a ticket resale site. When I looked at the offerings I could see seats for 180 bucks, 600 bucks, and 1500 bucks, and all of them not far away from each other. So the seller determines the price and if he gets it he gets it. Brokers do the same thing. They set the prices for the tickets and maybe they'll sell them, maybe they won't.

The Ohio State University has a site where ticket holders can turn their tickets in to a central site and attempt to sell them for whatever they choose. We sell ours occasionally, usually at a nice profit. And I'm very sure the buyer doesn't feel like they're being gouged- once again it all come down to what the market will bear. You know. That concept that is a perpetual mystery to our Timber-Rider.

The notion that someone like Billy Joel doesn't know what his concerts are going for is laughable. (if anything I'd imagine he told the arena to go f themselves because he thought he was worth 250 a seat!)

So I guess I can only hope Ms. Midler looks kindly on me and comes to my rescue. Perhaps she's a charitable lady and knows how I deserve to be at her show. But I doubt it.

There are those in the world who are not, um, savvy. I've talked to many people who bought tickets from a broker or scalper and didn't know it. One woman recently told me she didn't understand how she didn't buy tickets directly from us: after all, she typed in Blue Man Chicago and clicked on the very first link, just like you're supposed to. And the folks who tell me they bought tickets right from our website, chicagoboxoffice.com or seatsinthecity.com or what have you -- because no reputable business uses the name of the business in the web address, I guess?
