Kennywood announces adult chaperone policy for 2021

Posted | Contributed by BrettV

From the policy:

Guests aged 17 years and under must be accompanied by an adult chaperone beginning at 4:00 p.m.

An adult chaperone is a parent, guardian, or other supervising adult at least 21 years of age. Adult chaperones must be able to provide valid ID, including a photograph and date of birth.

Each adult chaperone must be present at the time of entry and remain within the park for the duration of their party’s visit.

So Kennywood is getting out of the day-camp business? That’s unfortunate.

Is this a Covid thing or some other thing? I know that Six Flags has often become a baby sitting service for kids during the summer and that's pretty annoying to other guests.

I think some of the adults should be chaperoned by responsible adults as well.

When I last visited in in 2018 the crowd and the surrounding neighborhoods were not, um, the best. A completely different feel than when I used to visit in the 90s and early 2000s when my grandfather was alive and we'd head up that way every summer. I remember thinking that I would not necessarily want to be one of the last guests out at the end of the night in the dark heading to the free far parking lot. Unfortunately I think it's probably more a result of that than anything else.

They had a few large brawls this year (and last year, and the year before) so this is likely a response to that. Kids can still enter the park early without a chaperone before 4pm so we’ll see how this goes.

Wow. This DECADE sucks. I bet this is because of that racial injustice we've went through this year. But then again, Pittsburgh is a city, so crime and other types of violence aren't confined to Kennywood or any other amusement park in the state.

As opposed to the previous 400 years?

I don't even understand what you're saying, but I know that I disagree with it.

This has been a longtime problem, but was definitely more widespread this past summer. I'm not sure if it's because more teens were out of work due to covid, because they somehow felt more comfortable getting into fights because there were so few families at the park this year, or other factors.

I forgot all about that incident.

Kennywood seems to be way ahead in the negative park news race. I can't wait to see what they announce before Christmas. Maybe Sky Rocket will be closed for another year.

Coasterbuzz - Coaster enthusiasts, but so much more. We're the good ones.

I think Sky Rocket opened this year, it was Steel Curtain that didn't. Maybe in 2021 they'll both be closed

If they let on chaperoned kids in before 4 o’clock, then they can stay the rest of the night. There’s no way they can track them down. This policy seems just like a show.

They do address that in the policy, but also, maybe it's not that important. Maybe they're finding that the kids who are there most of the day and are making a day of it don't cause as much trouble as those who arrive later and are just making a short stop?

Kennywood hates young people.
