Hong Kong's Ocean Park gears up to take on Disneyland

Ocean Park has been Hong Kong's most successful theme park for nearly 30 years, wowing generations of visitors with dolphin shows, stomach-churning roller coasters and a cable car ride over a mountain with spectacular views of the South China Sea. But the marine park's hammerhead sharks are about to face a fierce new competitor: Mickey Mouse. Disneyland is opening in Hong Kong in September, so Ocean Park has to figure out how to compete with one of the biggest names in its industry.

Granted, I know it's the mouse moving in, but after looking at the pics on RCDB I would think OP should be able to stand on it's own. The park looks very clean, their adding/remodeling, and the biggest draw to me being the view of the ocean and adjacent islands. What awesome views! Esp. if you're riding the coasters or launch tower. Most of these rides seem to sit right on the edge of the ocean, and up high above the surface. That would just add to the experience to me.

A $711 million US$ renovation? That's an extreme makeover ;)

Yup, considering some plans to build entire thrmr parks for $100 mil. ;)

I'll bet quite a bit of the cost might have to do with topography.

Anyway, I've wanted to go there since I was a kid who owned the Guiness Book of World Records whicg listed OP as the owner of the word's longest escalator. Our friends from Hong Kong have some great pictures of it too.

Wow, I was looking at some pictures of the park on rcdb.com, and it looks immensely better now than when I was there in 1999. I don't even remember the Mine Train coaster being there...and the Dragon looks a lot better. Hopefully a bit of competing gets the park to a better place, because when I was there, some of the park was in poor shape. Glad to see things are better.
I've been to ocean park before and seeing that, ocean park will still have much more rides and entertainment, then HK Disneyland for less, people will still flock to Ocean Park. The park is always clean and looking at the map of Hong Kong Disney, there are not that many rides, theres not even a Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! Ocean Park will not go down the drain! and yes, the escalator is HUGE!
