Electronic music show shut down at Quassy after suspected overdoses

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

In the constantly changing culture of synthetic drug use, officials were faced Saturday night with suspected overdoses from a drug called 2C-P. An electronic dance music show at Quassy Amusement Park was shut down late Saturday after a number of concertgoers were taken to hospitals for suspected drug overdoses, police said.

Didn't Six Flags have a similar problem recently? I feel very fortunate that I never felt the need, desire or pressure to do drugs.

Six Flags canceled a similar show because this happened @ past shows.

I don't understand the association of drugs with that genre of music. Of course, I don't imagine seeing it "performed" would be that interesting either.

Electric music is hard to pull off live. Most go for the drugs and atmosphere. I always thought NIN did it better than everybody else with the pivoting keyboard mounts, etc. But Trent endorsed the guitar...which crosses artistic lines.

Are these events really concerts? Or are they DJ's spinning tunes for a massive dance floor? I don't know...too old to go...

Industrial music is not, in my mind, in the same category (and certainly wasn't invented by NIN either).

In July of 1966 I rode my first Roller Coaster, a Steel Kiddie Coaster in Virginia Beach. A friend, who was six years older than I introduced the ride to me, and we had a ball riding it. He also rode with me on my first 'Major" Roller Coaster - Cedar Point's Blue Streak a year later. We went to many parks in the next few years, but then he and his family moved away. When I was in High School I learned he got involved in Drugs. He was arrested twice, spending a total of 3 1/2 years in prison. In 1983 his parents got a phone call. It was from my friend's employers, they were told he hadn't shown up for work for three days, and they couldn't get an answer when they tried to call his home. They went to his home, entered it and found him sprawled on his bed, DEAD. He had overdosed on Cocaine. Stay away from drugs, stay as far away as you can. When my doctor prescribes me something I ask if there are narcotics in the prescription, and if there are I ask him to prescribe something else. Drugs lead you only one way, DOWN!

That's a more accurate description than "performance".

Drugs are like a lot of things - handled responsibly, they have their place.

Someday soon, you'll be able to go into a medical marijuana shop with a prescription that is actually tailored to your condition. Seizures have been shown to respond well not to the THC that gets people "high", but to the CDB (Cannbidiol) that is also present in marijuana. Some growers have selected/developed specific strains particularly *high* (pun totally intended) in that compound...even some that have negligible, almost undetectable, levels of THC. That's in no way intended to get people stoned. That's medicine.

"Drugs" is a word I'd like to stop using. It equates pretty much everything from aspirin and ibuprofen to adderall and oxycodone to heroin and meth. and . And apparently "mollies."

Some are useful, some have no medicinal value, some are abused. ALL can kill - just heard an NPR broadcast on the recent upsurge in deaths from acetaminophen...a main component of many OTC remedies.

"Drugs are bad" sounds funny from Mr. Mackey - but it's not a good policy foundation.

Like most things, it's not a black & white issue.

Sometimes 'drugs' are good, sometimes 'drugs' are bad.

The main thing to remember is that if your drugs are bad, you need to find a new dealer and get the good ones.

(winky...kinda)

Speaking of NIN, the new album is very good! I highly recommend it for anyone who likes NIN!

Just be sure to buy the hi-fi version directly from the nin.com site.

I agree...the best he has done in years. I suspect that us old farts pimping Wax Trax and Reznor would be lost at these "electric festivals." Do they sing? Or is it just techno?

It's not the same category of music. This stuff has nothing to do with the likes of NIN, KMFDM, Ministry, Meat Beat Manifesto and the like.

Gonch, let's trade notes on security blind spots in Ohio amusement park parking lots. I'm only half kinda winking too.

Or make some brownies.

Well you would if you tried it lol. Synthetic drugs, synthetic sounds, they go hand in hand.

Brownies aren't really a good fit actually, given that the baking temperature is typically high enough to vaporize the key ingredients. Instead, we use these, because they bake at a lower temp., and because the only ingredient needed is butter, which is an ideal medium in which to extract.

(winky intentionally omitted)
