Cedar Point hotel loses landmark status

Posted | Contributed by wkyc.com

Cedar Point's Hotel Breakers has been removed from the National Register of Historic Places since the park knocked down several wings to build the tower addition. The park says that the demand for more rooms required that they take action. Federal and state authorities argue that the changes disrupted the "the spatial and visual relationship between the original rotunda and wings."

they had to add the extra rooms or they would lose business. it's unfortunate they lost the landmark status, but like the blue streak, they had to modify it to satisfy the insurance companies. also the park has tripled in the quantity of rides and patrons in the last 10 years.
The old wings were built at the turn of the century long before modern building codes were established.  Specifically complicating matters is the ADA.  If any building is modified/renovated it has to be made ADA compliant and also code compliant.  The old wings prob. were able to be made code compliant (new wiring, plumbing, etc) but there's no way they coudl've made them ADA compliant.  They either had to not touch the old wings or tear them down and build new  ones.  I guarantee you it was too expensive to modify the old wing to make it ADA compliant and though they wouldnt've lost thier Landmark status, they would've spent easily 5 times as much.  I don't think CP doesnt care about history, but they understand that sometimes economics must override other factors.

CPcyclone: For someone who puts "CP" in the name you sure aren't very aware of what goes on there, and you don't have a very good idea of what the public perception is either. Most people didn't even know the lighthouse was on the registry, and what do you know, it suddenly "appears" with the addition of Lighthouse Point, not as an after thought, but as an historic feature of the area.

Want more examples? The park owns several antique steam engines, keeps a museum, restored its ballroom in the Coliseum building, maintains its carousels... what else do you want? To suggest they don't care about history is uninformed.

Wahoo Skipper is right... the public doesn't give a damn about the building, they want nice rooms, and they got them with the tower. As much as people would like the building to match, no one built ten-story hotels in the middle of nowhere a hundred years ago, that's why the original structures sprawled out in every direction.

And I'd mention that, while not perfect, Breakers East isn't that out of place standing on the beach when compared to the center wings and rotunda.

I do like the job they did with breakers east. In the picture I took the towers house rooms like the old breakers and it even has similar roofing.

However I feel the tower is an eyesore regardless of it's location. That is one ugly building even if its laying out in the middle of nowhere it still looks very bland.
Something like this hotel would have been awesome.

Money was probably the issue though and most people probably would not care if they spent a little more to make the building look that darn good!

I do like the job they did with sandcastle. It looks, well like a sandcastle.

...and the Breakers was named for the waves breaking onto the beach, not to imply that something is broken...

I know CP couldn't restore the old Breakers wings,  but when they announced the new wings, I just thought they'd try to keep the old architecture.  They did a good job with Breakers East, I'm just a little disappointed with Breakers West.

I apologize for making harsh remarks, I just hate seeing any part of CP's past torn down, especially when it's that old.  You can call me one of those "perservation" freaks if you want.  To Jeff: I guess that's why my name is CPcyclone for the historical significance.
