If this is what comes to pass, I'm sure Disney doesn't care. The district's entire purpose is to "tax" Disney to build roads and maintain utilities, which costs them less than outright owning all of that and paying property tax on it. Any state appointed board members would have the same fiduciary duty to that purpose as the people that Disney selects.

The unfortunate thing is that DeSantis appears to have won something, but in reality he has not, just like the dozens of other things that he's attempted that were blocked in the courts. He's become a master of creating the perception of success in beating back culture things that ultimately have nothing to do with governing, but appeal to the base.

You are exactly right. He will be able to spin this as a victory, but having accomplished what...exactly?

Look at Walt Disney World (and the barometer for success of the Reedy Creek Improvement District) from a land development and planning perspective and tell me...what have they got wrong? They strike a balance between development and environmental preservation. Their road network is unmatched and their mass transportation continues to improve. They are a leading corporation in sustainability initiatives. Airports and other industries turn to them for advice on crowd control, retail efficiency, customer service, etc.

Maybe...just maybe...privatizing some of the core, traditional "government functions" isn't such a terrible idea.

Or having non-partisans run things. Like city managers. 😉

I'm still surprised by the number of people who think the district is a tax break, that they're not paying county taxes (to two counties, no less).

I thought it was weird that there weren't already lawsuits to fight this, but if that guy's take is right, Disney clearly believes in a diplomatic solution that in essence doesn't change anything. In that sense, DeSantis rolls a lot like Trump. He makes noise and looks to his base like he's doing something, but in the end, get nothing but no one is paying attention by then. He won't stick it to Disney, "Don't Say Gay" is still blocked. He lost the social media bill, he lost the fight against cruise lines to require vaccination and testing, he lost the "anti-riot" law to arrest protesters, he lost the law to cap voter initiative fundraising, "Stop WOKE" has been blocked... he's mostly a loser, just as Trump was.
