Kentucky Kingdom announces Storm Chaser

Posted Monday, July 20, 2015 3:09 PM | Contributed by Jeff

From the park:

We’re excited to announce the addition of our fifth and newest coaster, Storm Chaser. This will be the second new coaster to be constructed at the park in a period of only two years.

So that we can bring you a truly unique coaster, we have commissioned Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) to design and build it. Based in Idaho, RMC is on the cutting edge of coaster design and engineering and very well respected in the industry.

So, I guess this means new construction? Or is this what's becoming of twisted twins?

Never mind. The text finally loaded. It seems this is the iron horsing of the twins.

So this is a complete tear down of Twisted Sisters then? Not a conversion? Too bad, because an RMC racing/dueling conversion would have been pretty awesome.

However, I've been interested in a barrel roll first drop since I had the idea as a kid and wondered why it had never been done earlier. (Yes, I know about the one in Mexico... and I'm not really sure that Drachen Fire counts.)

*edit* I was basing what I wrote above on a different article and the terrible quality video. Still sounds like a "mostly teardown." But my question still stands... Why did they not keep the dual coaster element?

I'm sure they considered it and just didn't see a business case for it. This looks like an awesome ride and should be a big hit for KK, but I severely doubt the limited increase in return to make it a duel-er again would have outpaced the additional cost.

Frankly by 1998 / 1999 it was easy to sense that the park was way over-invested in the dry side vs. the waterpark, especially with the addition of Chang only a year prior. The whole original Twister Twins / Twisted Sisters project was always kind of a puzzle for me.

Well, they had 8 coasters. Then they closed and re-opened with only 3. Now they will be back to 5. So, progress?

I never rode the twins, so I'm not sure if that is a sad loss or not, but at least something is going to finally be done. They were SBNO for a long time before the park even closed.

Lola was pretty much a poor ride that seemed to be shoehorned into the much better Stella ride...

(Normally I'd make a comparison to Dueling Dragons at this point, but I'm afraid of the potential backlash...LOL).

This is primarily Lola with some overbanking/rolls. Assuming they are DEMOing Stella it's hard to see how this could be much cheaper than starting from scratch. But whatevs, I assume they have done their math. It looks like fun and can only be better than what was there before.

Thank you.

So a good friend and I are having an argument (can we find ANYthing else to talk about? guess not...) as to how much of each side of the former ride's footprint is being used. He says due to the side-by-side dueling nature of the twins they are using both. I say they are taering down one and leaving the other.

I suppose google maps would know.

It's probably just because of the drop but this thing looks like Medusa. It looks really cool. I think the reason they aren't doing it dueling is because I read some article that said the project will cost around 15 million. Correct me if I'm wrong but if you did 2 sides it would be like 30 million, which seems out of whack for KK. They could have done better than No Limits though. The ride looks insane to say the least.

There seems to be a theme to their coaster names now... so... when are they renaming "T3" to "60% chance of rain"?

The "two coasters in as many years" is referencing the re-opened SLC, right?

In the UK, the advantage of using the Twins as a basis, rather than building from scratch would be that the planning permission process would be far more straightforward, as long as x% of the structure was remaining. I don't think that is a concern for KK?

I'm not entirely sure what they're saving (or not demolishing) at this stage, rides that have been operating up until the point they are I-Boxed are pretty much flattened. I'm not sure what they can retain from something that has been sat there - perhaps more because it's a steel structure (I think?).

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if they demolish the other half. Maybe they'll rehab it as a wooden coaster and have a dueling steel/wooden coaster? This ride looks like its the same footprint as half the original coaster (Lola? I don't know names).

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance

I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola

L-O-L-A Lola, la-la-la-la Lola...

You're welcome... :-)

I'm thinking they were referencing Lightning Run....
