Disney engineers visit Enchnated Forest to look at new ride

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The Walt Disney Co. sent a team to the Enchanted Forest Wednesday to check out The Challenge of Mondor, a trackless indoor target shooting ride. Disney "Imagineers" came to the Turner theme park to research the possibilities of using the same ride system in Disneyland, Enchanted Forest officials said.

I rode this last week - it was pretty cool.

Having said that, Disney already have a trackless system on the Poohs Hunny Hunt attraction in Tokyo DisneyLand. Why would they need a different one?

This technology has been around for a number of years. I believe Sally has used it on their interactive dark rides. I rode on one in Niagara Falls , Canada back in 2003.
The system on Pooh's Hunny Hunt at Tokyo Disneyland is very expensive and complicated. The technology can best be simplified as an "indoor GPS", which involves trasmiting data to the vehicles through titles on the attraction floor. This other system that WDI is looking into sounds like a much cheaper alternative that doesn't require Oriental Land Company's deep pockets. ^_^

Knowing what I know about Enchanted Forest, I'm willing to bet that the ETF trackless system wasn't the only thing the Disney Imagineers are interested in. I know I was very interested in the Challenge of Mondor when I was there back in June, and I didn't even manage to ride the darned thing! :)

Disney has many trackless indoor/outdoor systems. LOADS, from Universe of Energy and Great Movie Ride (wires in the floor give off signals for the vehicle to follow, sure there's a "track" but it's not a physical one) to Tower of Terror, to Pooh at TDL and the aqua ride at TDS. I can see them upgrading their systems more to new technology, but Disney looks into a lot of things, I'd say this is more of a shopping trip to the mall instead of a trip to a store with Iger's credit card in hand. :)

Not sure if it turned out this way, but if I understood correctly, the original plan was to have a "bonus room" or two depending on score or specific targets hit....

The "flume/coaster" was quite the hit at EF as well...
