General Electric Co. and Comcast Corp have agreed on a valuation of around $30 billion for a joint venture between NBC Universal and Comcast, ironing out what has been a key obstacle in talks so far, a source familiar with the matter said on Sunday.

Re: Comcast and GE agree on valuation for NBC Universal

Not sure what it would mean for the parks, but outside of that specific area I really don't like this deal. Content producers and the deliverer(s) of that content should be wholly separate. Hopefully this won't pass the FCC/FTC scrutiny it is sure to draw.

I'm guessing that NBC doesn't have a large-engouh market share of "content" for this to meet the US anti-trust bar. If this were in the EU, they might pay more attention, but probably not here.

Re: Comcast and GE agree on valuation for NBC Universal

I'm sure they don't meet that market-share level, but I would hope the recent focus of the FCC and the new vigor it seems to have to actually be proactive and consumer friendly would be enough to make them at least glance this way and give it some thought. If nothing else it at least merits a strong discussion of separating content and delivery no matter what the market share.

I don't like it either. It's a slippery slope.

Yeah, I've been saying since the beginning that owning the content and the pipe is a dangerous situation. Comcast already owns several networks (like G4, which sucks), but I don't know if they do anything shady like put them in lower channel numbers or whatever.

Haha... Thist store is a good one. Heck they can't even keep the internet connected in my neighborhood..lol. You're right about G4 too Jeff.

Just found this article on the NBC/Comcast situation over on Ars Technica. Or course it is focused solely on the technical and legal side of things, but I think some here may be interested in it.

That's a great article. Ars has actual attorneys writing for them, and several specialize in IP and media law. But it brings up a lot of my concerns, and references my continuing frustration with deregulation as religion. Commercial radio sucks today because of deregulation.

Commercial radio sucks because the music (if you can call it that) is just plain crappy.

If I have a choice, I'll drop in a CD instead.

If its music that you're after (as opposed to talk radio), and you have a smart phone with a data plan, get something like Pandora. Its a lot more free than satellite radio.

No. CD's is how we poor people who don't have iPods listen to music in their cars. It's a shiney disk dis on which music is stored.

Re: Comcast and GE agree on valuation for NBC Universal

What difference does it make? Who do you think puts the crappy music on radio? Clear Channel, and they own the stations they do because of deregulation.

Re: Comcast and GE agree on valuation for NBC Universal

So now that comcast owns universal, does that mean when a ride breaks down it will take several days to get it fixed?
