Reliability is based on several factors, mainly: Security, Performance under loads, and Uptime.
My opinion is based on market share, which bases their usage on those metrics above.. People arent going to buy Microsoft or Linux based on coolness factor (thats limited to Apple). In the Govt sector which I have a large amount of experience in as well as the meduim to large companies, there is a big push on the *nix side for back end as the security has been proven in several cases to be much tighter during Nessus scans than Windows. (out of the box). To lock down a windows server takes a decent amount of tweaking, which in govt, time = money.
Perimeter security for large corporations has been my job for decades, I dont base my findings on personal feel. Its on real world pen tests that have been done time and time again for DoD.
I agree. The generalizations can be silly on both sides of the spectrum. But time and time again I have found more *nix folks know the ins and outs of Windows than windows folks know *nix. So im basing it on my sampling of being in the IT industry working edge devices.
As for me.. I feel it important to deepen my resume and be proficient in both sides.. I dont find it personally fulfilling to stovepipe myself to one area. Cross platform knowledge allows for easy company migrations or coexistence.
Bottom line its hard to disagree that one side can certainly preform better than the other depending on the application. We as well as the industry choose those items based on such. More bang, for less buck.
