Walt Disney World's buses were removed from service after a suspicious object was found mounted on one during an inspection. A bomb squad spent 3 ½ hours examining the device, which turned out to be harmless. Disney workers inspected the entire fleet of about 300 buses as a precaution. They were returned to service, one by one, as soon as they were deemed safe.

Re: Disney World suspends bus service after suspicious device found under bus

Is anyone else annoyed that they never describe the "device" in these situations? I've just gotta imagine that to really cause suspicion, it's gotta be menacing looking.

Re: Disney World suspends bus service after suspicious device found under bus

I'm not sure it needs to look all that menacing. It just needs to look completely out of place. We had a situation in one of our parks where there was a full milk bottle filled with a liquid that was obviously not milk and there was a towel wrapped around it. It has been placed in an empty handicapped parking space immediately outside the entrance to a building.

It didn't look menacing but we called the cops and closed the building until it was found to be nothing.

I'm thinking the next "target" of international or domestic terrorism is likely something like an amusment park or a sports stadium. It might not be as large a scale as something like 9/11 but it could pull at the nation's emotions just as significantly.

I don't mind being slowed down on my way into the Magic Kingdom to have my bags checked but having worked at the park I know that any wrong doing likely won't walk in the front gate.

Yea, I wanna know what it was damn'it.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Re: Disney World suspends bus service after suspicious device found under bus

At first I thought this was like the CP incident, but the article says the device was mounted under the bus. I'm wondering how somebody could pull that off and not attract attention. How could you even do that with the bus in service, and if they're out of service, aren't they in a secure area?

Getting crazy on the Waltzer, but it's the life that I choose.

Might not be as large a scale? I could care less about the property loss, so yes a sports stadium might not be as prominent as the World Trade Center towers. However, the potential loss of life could far exceed that of 9/11. The loss of life is the only thing that matters.

I do mind being slowed down by the bag checks at the Magic Kingdom. The bag checks are worthless and a total inconvenience. If people think that really protects them then they're in the group of our society that can be classified as "ignorant and stupid". Trust me, terrorists are not a part of that group and if they desire they'll get past the grandma purse check and the teenage mom diaper bag examination.

In this post-9/11 world even a paper clip is a "device".

They sometime park busses unattend in the TTC parking lot. As for attaching a device without attracting attention, it would only take 2 cheap high power magnets, as the bus driver, who is attentively telling his guest about the next new expanison of the monorail system that will travel thru the swan hotel, if you get my point.

Maybe the yo yo ho left the 'device' in the Cedar Point's parking lot was at Coranado Springs at a letcure, and he accidentally left it under a bumper.

Re: Disney World suspends bus service after suspicious device found under bus

So more info has come out on this device. It was a transponder of some sort. Authorities are trying to figure out if someone was tracking the bus or had some other intent with the device.

Could be for planning an attack. Tracking bus movements to figure out the best time place for an attack.

So anyhow, it was a wireless tire pressure monitor installed in 1998.

Apparently, a cast member was unfamiliar with the device and called police.

D'oh!

Re: Disney World suspends bus service after suspicious device found under bus

You would think that someone in the maintenance dept management would have looked at it before shutting down all of the buses. I can see maybe calling the cops first for that bus but wouldn't supervisors need to sign off before all of the resort's buses are shut down? Better safe than sorry.

And that had to suck for people at the resorts. We depended on the public transportation for everything (and it ran very well). About 1/2 the time, we were on buses.

Actually, that's embarrassing enough that I'm inclined to believe it.

I just wonder if the "device" looked like THIS...

Re: Disney World suspends bus service after suspicious device found under bus

I actually did that for this thread, largely because of the discussion from Jeff's original question, but with this thread quietly dying I just had to figure out a way to slip it into the other thread.

1) It's a wireless, suspicious-looking device

2) We gotta have fun with this stuff.

Good one Dave! All right, who doesn't know where that pic came from?

I didn't crop the image, so the aspect ratio alone ought to be a huge hint!
