Kings Island has voluntarily shut down the Son of Beast roller coaster after a woman claimed that she had suffered a head injury after riding the coaster last month, according to park officials.

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

I understand the legitimacy of the head injury is still being explored. But despite that, I think the idea that anyone would say something to the effect of, "it's a wooden coaster; it's supposed to be bumpy; you should expect it" is kind of comical.

I don't expect head injuries when I ride any coasters. Do you? Really?

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

The bad news is that I'm taking Ava down to KI this weekend and I won't be able to take her on her first ride on SOB. The good news is that I'm taking Ava down to KI this weekend and I won't be able to take her on her first ride on SOB. ::phew of relief::

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

Honestly, rides are rated in intensity from 1 to 5. Sonny is a seven...at least. There should be a way for the park to...discourage...some guests from participating. Of course, they can't really do that - the lawyers wouldn't approve. Beast's helix is very aggressive, I love it. I'm the one who loved TG's back seat enough to go back around for more the year before it closed for renovation. But the Rosebowl is more than I can enjoy.

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

LOL! Ensign Smith I am making my first ever trip to KI this summer and I was thinking pretty much the same thing. I hope it is still closed when I go so I am not tempted to get the ride credit. My old back can't take those rough woodies anymore.

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

I can't even really categorize this coaster as a rough woodie. I really think it's some kind of torture device. In the middle of my ride I just started confessing all kinds of random things in the hopes the coaster would just stop mid-course.

Absolutely I expect head injuries. But only if I were to ever ride SoB a second time.

I've always found it peculiar the ride hasn't caused at least one lawsuit per week. It's not even funny how bad that coaster hurts.

I hate the 1 - 5 rating system Cedar Fair has. How can Gemini be a 5, the same as TTD and MF when they aren't even close to the same intensity levels.

Six Flags is worse since they only have 3 levels, low thrill, moderate thrill and high thrill. The Dark Knight, Skull Mountain, Runaway Mine Train and Rolling Thunder are all rated as high thrills, the same rating as Kingda Ka and Nitro.

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

The one time I rode it I actually dislocated my shoulder and relocated it on the next hard bump. I still have shoulder issues to this day. They should have closed this thing a long time ago.

*Sigh... makes me wish SOB was an Intamin pre-fab*

Yeah really! I should of kept that in mind the times I exited the ride feeling like my head was hit with a sledgehammer. Everytime I have rode it I have always had to "take it easy" for a while afterwards until the painkillers kicked in (in addition to the painkillers I would take about an hour before riding.)

The only other ride that I can remember inducing that much head trauma and actually made me think I was going to bleed from my ears or nose at any minute was Flight Of Fear before they went to lapbars. OUCH!!!!!

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

I'm surprised they've kept the ride around this long. I know that for whatever reason the public seems to love it, but it seems like having something so violent is a pretty big liability for the park. That being said, I thought it was at least tolerable after getting the new trains. When I rode it with the original trains and loop, it was the only ride I've ever been on where I wished I could just stop it and get off.

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

For the safety of all others, I really hope SOB stays down for good. This is one of only a few coasters where people come to a stop at the end of the ride and boo and yell how painful the ride was. I rode it my first time this Summer, and it was as bad as everyone says it is, my neck felt like it took on a new shape after the ride.

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

We rode Sunday before last, my 2nd torturous spin of the season. And the only reason it was my second time is that I was with a friend who had never ridden and the line was short. So we didn't wait for the front seat, (big mistake), but instead took the short line for seat 4. (bigger mistake). I've never been so miserable in my life, near tears, and my back hurt so bad during the ride I seriously considered bailing at the mid-course brake. ("Hey, Carrie! What are you doing standin' here?) I should join this woman in her complaint as my back still hurts.

Son of Beast should go, I'm sorry to say. No amount of warnings or ratings is enough to prepare unsuspecting riders, and once the lawsuit floodgates open, well... Those of you that can stand it, more power to ya. It should be reserved for the halest and hardiest out there. The hapless contestants on Wipeout stand a better chance.

Who I feel sorriest for are the trains, poor things. Imagine being removed from the 2nd roughest ride in the universe, thinking you were finally gonna get a new lease on life, only to find yourself clamped to the track of the 1st roughest ride in the universe. I bet one turned to the other and said "WTF?!? did we do to deserve this?"

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

I'm sure its just a matter of time before it goes. I will be sad since I worked on it 3 summers in a row. Cedar Fair doesn't have much money sunk into it so they probably wouldn't be out all that much. On a side note the 3 times I have gone to KI this year SOB has had a long line. Of course this is probably because Cedar Fair was only running 1 train each time. Stupid Cedar Fair......

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

I guess I am alone to have found the ride great at least in the front half of the train, and especially in the first car. The back was a bit rough, but I've ridden far worse and didn't see why everyone makes such a huge deal out of it. It's an intense wooden coaster that is bumpy and all of the warning signs say this. It is FAR from being the most painful ride I have ever been on.

Who knows,I also find alot of rides people say are painful or whatever to be still fun and not nearly as bad as people say. I hope it is still there next time I go, as I enjoyed the ride very much! They could make some improvements I suppose, but I would still ride it as-is anytime.

Re: Son of Beast closed for investigation

^Yep. A non-wheel seat near the front of the train isn't bad at all.
