Jeff and Mike review this week's news in the amusement industry.

  • Mike is now Daddy 2.0 with the birth of his second daughter. A long discussion on raising babies ensues.
  • Swine Flu mania sweeps the nation, while Six Flags Mexico closes for a few days.
  • The draw of Harry Potter and a Chicago museum. Mike says they have cool stuff, including a submarine in a building.
  • Wild West World developer goes to jail, but we feel pretty strongly that the "victims" are just as stupid as the accused.
  • Pilgrim's Plunge opens to the public, and Santa is all wet. Holiday World posts very cool photos all over the Interwebs.
  • Schmeck gets his due love. Mike suggests that measuring the importance of a ride might not be best served by its age. Rather, the ways that it pushed forward the art and science of roller coaster making, that's a better gauge.
  • Results week puts everyone down a bit, though with Easter falling in a different quarter, it's hard to make a good comparison to last year. Disney offsets declines with deep discounts that keep up attendance, and may benefit from people being exposed to the parks who might not otherwise go.
  • Mike notices the changes around his local Six Flags park after a two year skip, now roaming the midways with his daughter in tow.
  • Ride renaming continues at Freestyle Music Park.
  • Teens versus grown-ups in a battle for seasonal jobs!
  • Terminator trains arrive at Magic Mountain, and we're surprised at how enormous and heavy they look when they're not on the track.
  • Alton Towers laying out plans for expansion, while the Adventure Dome in Las Vegas says it will invest in new rides as soon as the economy picks up. Jeff and Mike have still never been there, despite many trips to Vegas.

Jeff...in answer to your question: Yes, we do run Raging Rapids, Frightful Falls and Pilgrims Plunge (all located in Holiday World) along the Holiday World schedule. All three rides have been open the past two weekends. Open daily as of Friday, May 15.

Pilgrims Plunge will be accessible from both Holiday World *and* Splashin' Safari, but it's technically a Holiday World ride.

The reason Disney has the picture watchers at Splash is that they have a seperate set of monitors before the purchasing area that show the pictures. The pictures are removed before people can see them automatically upload to those monitors. Then there is a set of monitors at the purchasing location where the CM can "bring up" the photos to confirm a purchase.

That sounds like a lot of extra work and infrastructure just to censor the occasional boob! But then again, it's Disney!

Well, they've learned their lesson now. Disneyland's Splash was the first on-ride photo setup they put in, so they didn't account for those wanting to flash or flip off the camera. And from what I heard, it wasn't just occasional but a very common goal of guests in the early days of the ride...

Umm.. Disney isnt the only one who previews all ride photos before public display.. BGE does it as well.. Before a photo goes onto the public screen it has to pass the photo screener who has to send the approved photo to the public screen.. Otherwise you get a blank screen on the train series shots if someone in your photo section did something questionable..

I dont find that unusual at all..

I'm grew up with CP, "flashing" the Magnum camera as a teenager. Apparently that was offensive to some people, as I'd see it, then see it go blank.

Does lend the question to who/what is determined as offensive?? Ive seen kids at BGE do some thinks I find immature, but not offensive on coaster and walk to the ride photo booth to only be treated to a blank screen, which irritated me because I was the unfortunate one to be in the same series shot as them...

Course I probably wouldnt want to buy the photo anyways, but imagine if I was a family that traveled miles to the park and looked forward to ride photo memories..

The thought that someone in the same serious could ruin your moment is kinda irritating when I think about it.

Disney has an unoffical policy that if you want to buy a picture, and it's "Washed Away" (aka some guy behind you flipped the bird or something), they'll let you re-ride again...

I would think that you would be able to ask someone and they could pull up the picture for you, so you could see if it was a good shot of you or not. 90% of these pictures get cropped and covered with borders when they are printed so you probably won't be able to see what the other people are doing.
I can see where they would refuse to print it if the other person is flashing the camera but if they are showing the finger or something else that would probably be covered I would not see a problem with it.
