With the unemployment rate rising and an uncertain economy, people all over the US are lining up at amusement park job fairs looking for work. These stories have been surfacing almost daily. Here's a sample:

Cedar Point: AP via MSNBC
Six Flags America: WJLA/Arlington
Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom: The Courier-Journal
Alabama Adventure: WCFT/Birmingham

We are either going to have a lot of disgruntled employees or one of the best seasons of amusement park staff in history.

Yeah, we were wondering about that on the forthcoming podcast as well. With a larger pool of applicants, is the potential for better workers higher?

"All the thrills with 75% less apathy!"

We've noticed this at Silver Dollar City. A lot of their workers are older and they treat the guests with more warmth. Plus, who's going to give lip to someone who reminds them of their grandmother?

BGE had so many applicants this year they reduced the number of Job fairs from 4 to 2 because there was no need to draw people..

In past years they had to have a few fairs throughout the winter/spring to pick up the stragglers.. Now they are beating their doors down.

I also wonder what effect this will have on parks that have a large base of foreign employees.

Its interesting you ask that.. Due to the large amount of locals filling positions at BGE, you are probably going to see a less J-1 students.(term used for foreign students who are allowed work in the US at an "academic training" location). It actually costs Busch more to have these students as they also provide housing and such for them. With the influx of locals and the economy the way it is, it has become and unfortunate convenience that you may see less this year.

In a way its a shame as it adds to the appeal of the respective countries they work in, however it wont be a total elimination.. Just not as many..

Re: Seasonal amusement park job fairs draw record crowds everywhere

I actually gave a passing thought to appying at CP this year.

The good news is that a former boss who fired me last summer was willing to give another shot. For that I am grateful. I work hard with a fun group of guys and get great perks.
