Huge new park planned for Pittsburgh

$105 million for a 400 acre amusement park?
Where are they shopping? Sam's Club?

Man... that is VERY very cheap for an amusement park from scratch of that size & what they plan on having... fat chance!

Back here in Buffalo, there was an amusement park planned during the spring, summer & fizzled out in the fall when it went thru the tubes. It was supposed to be a partially domed amusement park on about 100 or so acres of land and cost well over 160 million for that project. It would have very similar qualities of this one proposed by the Pitt Airport, except it was by the waterfront of Lake Erie.

I don't see this happening, because the real cost will be nearly half a billion when all is said & done.

Uh... $105 million wouldn't pay for the ticket booths at those Disney parks.

If this was April 1st I would think it is all a big joke. It is December 13th and I still think it is a joke.

I wouldn't give these people a dime in venture captial. I'd laugh them right out of my office.

There was also a indoor NASCAR type speedway that was proposed for the old airport property. That did not materialize.

Kennywood has nothing to worry about. Infact, when this place goes to crap after two years of operation, Kennywood will either own the property or own more that half of the rides.

Five times as large as Kennywood? Wow. And, do we even have to bother? It's another Jazzland scenario. Give it not more than two seasons by itself and we'll have ourselves Six Flags Pittsburgh in no time.

I giant theme park? In Pittsburgh? I doubt that this will ever materialize.

Remember Paradise Lake? It was done on a small budget......

If you saw the guy doing this project when they interviewed him on the news this morning, you saw his current job... making sandwiches at a deli.

Unless one of his investors has "Cedar" or "Flags" in their name, I'd imagine this'll end up being installed right next to that indoor NASCAR speedway.

Maybe they can buy that monorail from the Simpsons... or the popsicle stick skyscraper... or the escalator to nowhere...

I believe the Coaster Preservation Organization, (formly Club) may be an investor at the $1.50 level.

I said this on the other thread too...Channel 4 is desperate for a story. Might as well be about someone deciding to create the world's largest wad of gum.

Sounds like one of our regular 13-year-old visitors and his delusion of grandeur. Of course I can't say it nearly as well as Coasta Playa...but you catch my snowdrift right?

They've got to lose the "Only in America" name. It's terrible. I think I'd rather wear a "South of the Border" t-shirt. Phantom's Revenge Rules, where do you suppose that Kennywood would put any extra rides should the park not work out? It's not like the park is oozing with extra room.

I really hope this works out, as skeptical as I am. I am a resident of Franklin Park, so this would be cool if it becomes anything.

I am even more skeptical then felix. I attend college about 2 miles from the Pittsburgh airport and obviously would be thrilled to see this new park but I don't think it has a chance. Some of the marketing ideas they list I think are good ideas. College ID gets in for about 10 bucks cheaper. 2 Free Days, and the Zip Code day could help get some local people. So many different ideas were proposed for the old Pittsburgh Airport ever since it closed over 10 years ago and they finally just completed a little office park last year. This city has enough problems with the budget crisis and the horrible road system before they could worry about a huge park. How would anyone who is not west of the city get there?

Hmm, you would think that they would give more info on the coasters that will be at the park on their site.....but it only says "coasters"----interesting..........

Hey critics, I took some time to talk to these people. They would not say much. What they did send me was a some kind of start up study. Pretty lame, but it did verify that the 105 million was just for the 20 acre water-park, that will open before the rest of the park does. It seems wtae may have chopped that up a bit. I am still not sure what to believe, but I now believe they definately have more of a chance than what was shown on that interview. I do personally feel better about them and their experience, after talking to them. They contacted me back extremely fast, knew their facts and figures, and overall really seemed like nice people with their heads screwed on straight. Let's hope for the best. Larry

Nice people with their heads screwed on straight also came up with an indoor NASCAR track, a high-speed maglev, a revitilization of the 5th/Forbes corridor and all sorts of other major Pittsburgh projects that are either seriously delayed or will never happen. It's not gonna happen people, at least not until there's a park in Indiana or possibly North Carolina to feed them rides ...

I voted. I think a 10 minute roller coaster would be fun, but after the first few minutes, it would get boring, and you would like to get off.

A 10 minute line for a 10 minute coaster? No way. A 2 hour line for a 10 minute coaster is more like it. I went to Hersheypark on a cloudy day, and you barely had to wait in line at all, though.

What's the record for the longest coaster?

...ok, maybe not. I don't know enough about the geography of that area to know how close it is. But having been buzzed by UPS 747's while riding Twisted Sist... er... Twins here in Luahvul, the words "airport" and "amusement park" in the same paragraph isn't usually a good thing...
