Cedar Point not worried about competition from Six Flags Ohio

And Cedar Point shouldn't be overly worried about competition from Six Flags Ohio: SFO has a long way to go before it would compete at the same level as Cedar Point, which is a well-rounded resort destination that is agressively pursuing ways to encourage guests to stay--at CP hotel properties--for several days. SFO just isn't that large, at least not yet. It takes more than adding roller coasters every year to make a great, or a successful--or a great and successful--park.

Six Flags Ohio will never be able to compete head-to-head with Cedar. SF need to make themselves more professional in terms of operations, capacity and traffic in the park and out.

So Jeff, do you secretly work for CP? You are getting to be quite famous there, bud.

Cedar Point should be a little concerned, I mean, 4 major coasters installed at SFO in just 2 years is nothing to take too lightly. True, CP is a terrific park, and sets a number of standards throughout the industry, but if SFO continues to receive new rides at this rate, CP could have some major competition down the road a bit. If SF is investing so heavily in their Ohio property, they must be quite serious about competing with the Point.

I do not think Six Flags Ohio is trying to compete head-to-head with Cedar Point. Six Flags Ohio is trying, successfully, to put itself on the map in the this part of the country. Cedar Point because of its world class rides and park draws from a much larger geographic area than Six Flags Ohio. But if Six Flags Ohio continues to add coasters unique to this part of the country such as the floorless coaster, Superman The Ultimate Escape, and now X-Flight, people traveling to Cedar Point might might be willing to pop in on Six Flags Ohio and give its coaster collection a try as well.

Six Flags Ohio will not try to become Cedar Point, I doubt they could if they tried. They will not be building the biggest and fastest like Cedar Point will continue to do. But they will continue to try to attract people with its interesting collection of coasters and with its Six Flags brand name, for what that is worth.

The true winner of all of this competion is us, the coaster riding and appreciating public.

It would be nice if Six Flags would toss some of that money in other directions: maintaining existing structures. Upgrading foodservice operations and offerings. Perhaps some refined training for their employees on how to be polite and helpful. X Flight sounds delgihtful, but I probably won't go back to SFO for a number of years. The overall park experience in 2000 was unsatisfactory.

I don't know why they should be worried. And I honestly don't understand why they keep sending out these press statememnts saying they're not worried.

That's too bad, because it's making them look defensive. A new rollercoaster is great, but that really is only part of what makes a competitive park. Is the press too stupid to realize that?

I think SFO isn't really taking anything from CP.
All you guys are right, they need some more exciting things to start taking a bite out of CP's annual income from attendance.

No, that's the point... SFO does have some exciting new things but it's not going to take out of CP's attendance. The markets don't have enough overlap, and the economy is decent enough that it's not a one-or-the-other thing.

While SF may be trying to compete with Cedar Point, by adding roller coasters to SFO, they are not trying to compete with Ohio`s busiest park in `99 (PKI). If SF wants to compete with PKI they should add attractions to SFKK. I live in Cincinnati and have passes to PKI. In my opinion, Six Flags needs to concentrate on parks that desperatly need money and new rides instead of just adding roller coaster at SFO. (SF needs to make each SF park unique in some way.)

Six Flags is trying to come up with a quick fix to TRY and draw people away from CP and PKI. While PKI and CP realize that roller coasters are not the only things that make people visit a park.

In my opinion, Six Flags doesn't focus that much attention on parks with no direct competition. Look at Elitch Gardens, who is the nearest competitor to compete with that park, and what rides or rollercoasters do they have that could put Elitch Gardens to shame. So look at it from this point then you'll understand why Elitch Gardens and other Six Flags properties don't get new rides.

jp, if you ask me, you're correct. If SF doesn't have to build a new ride at a park because of no competition, they're not going to. California, Ohio, and I would say the areas like Penn. and stuff like that are high competition areas. Within a 6 hour drive from cleveland you can get to CP, Kennywood, PKI, and it is probably a little more than 6 to SFKK, SFGreat America, and Dorney.... so there is a lot around here. In Ohio now there are over 30 coasters.

Ohio is the place to be CP my home park. It doesnt take six hours from cleveland to sandusky it might be two.

Thank you JP, Thank you!! I wish SF would at least TRY to put some quality rides into SFEG. Why in the world did SF buy out Elitch Gardens if they aren't even interested in putting new rides in every few years? I mean, if Elitch Gardens was still locally owned I bet we would have gotten more rides by now. So all you guys in California and Ohio area can go "indulge" yourselves while we sit here and wait for any new coaster to come. Well hey think of it this way, us Coloradoens have a way to whisk away the off-season blues. Can anyone say: Ski Resorts?

First, CP says they are not worried about SFMM getting the most roller coasters in the world, now they say they are not worried about competition from SFO. I think the reason that they are bragging about it is because in 2002, they may get their Roller Coaster Capital title again by putting in another coaster(s). They usually come up with another coaster every other year, and unlike Six Flags parks who come out with new coasters every year, Cedar Point's new coasters are really something special, I mean REALLY, REALLY something special, especially in this case. If CP is jealous of SFMM about having more coasters, they have a right to be, but they can brag about having the most roller coaster track than any other park in the world, and most rides, period.

He didn't mean it takes 6 hours. He said you could get to ALL those parks within 6 hours.
