SuperNova n00bs

Just had to share this idiocy.

I went at GameWorks in Columbus last Saturday to play some DDR. GW has a new SuperNova machine, along with Extreme. There are some scrubs playing SuperNova, so I sit down and watch.

I watch them play through three or four 4-song sets, and NONE OF THEM PLAYED ANY NEW SONGS. Every song they played was also on the Extreme machine, which is about 10 steps away, and also half as expensive (SN costs about $2.60 a game, Extreme about $1.30).

In addition, the Extreme machine was turned up so you could hear it; the SN machine was so quiet you literally couldn't hear the music at all.

Someone on a DDR forum confirmed he saw the exact same thing happening at Gameworks in Newport, KY.

Why???? There is no reason to play SN unless you play the new songs... sheesh.

You're such a snob, Den. I'm not good enough to play songs I'm not comfortable with, so I'd probably do the same thing, on the newer machine because it's more shiny.

See, this is why I only DDR when no one but friends are around. If I saw someone sit down and watch, eeeehh... I freeze up.

Anyway, ontopic, I also saw this at the GameWorks in Auburn Hills, MI (in Great Lakes Crossing). Didn't quiet understand it myself, but then again maybe these people weren't total DDR freaks that didn't know that the songs were in the cheaper machine. Who knows?

I jumped right into the new songs. Even dared myself and did a 6-footer. Sad? Sure, but it was fun.

I hope the 6-footer you played was not Under the Sky. It starts like a 6-footer but ends like an 8-footer - looong string of fast crossovers.

Jeff - surely you would've moved over to the Extreme machine after you realized the only music you could hear while playing SN is Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" playing at 200db over the house speakers...

They have the same sound issue at Dorney. You can not hear the Supernova machine at all but the Extreme machine is very loud (but has horrible pads, that cause you to fail almost instantly).

$1.30 for a round of Extreme at Gameworks sounds reasonable. I haven't been to a Gameworks in 2002 since the local one (Philadelphia) was $3.75 for 3 songs on Max 2 and $3.00 for 4 songs on DDR USA! *** Edited 8/23/2006 2:09:34 AM UTC by YoshiFan***

Even at $1.30 a game, the GameWorks Extreme is the most expensive one in town. The best machine in town (i.e. loudest, great pads, good atmosphere) is $1 for three songs with joint premium on. There's even a roller-skating rink that has In the Groove 2 for 50 cents a game, and FREE on certain nights (you have to buy the pizza buffet to get in, though - but it's awesome).

The DDR Extreme machine near me is 5 songs for a dollar.

Bring out your dead...I know, but I gotta jump in.

I played the Super Nova machines at CP over Labor Day, and did the new songs (as far as I know). I like the new difficulty set-up a lot better than previous machines.

On another note, I played the USA machine down at the GameWorks in Circle Center in Indy a few weeks ago, and hated it. Remind me never to touch that machine again. Horrible selection of songs, didn't recognize a single one.

Wait, wait - you didn't RECOGNIZE a single song on DDR USA?

The songs on DDR USA are the original and most venerable DDR songs in the history of the game. You didn't regonize Afronova? End of the Century? Dynamite Rave? Paranoia? Trip Machine? Dead End? These songs have been on almost every single arcade mix that's ever been created, including SuperNova!

I'll give you that DDR USA sucks, but if you didn't recognize any songs, you must have just started playing yesterday.

I don't play DDR that much, as there aren't many arcades in my area (closest ones are in Ft. Wayne, an hour away), and there are no normal DDR songs on Mario Mix. I did play Paranoia, but the mix was not what I remember from some of the other machines, same for End Of the Century. I didn't recognize those mixes.

I think the problem is that literally every old DDR arcade machine with the has been upgraded to an Extreme or an arcade has Supernova so someone who has only been playing since 2003 or later really is not used to a lot of the older songs. The last time I played a DDR USA was at Disney MGM in 2004 and it was kind of refreshing to play some of the old songs again but it reminded me of how much I miss 3rd Mix Korean 2. But like I said, all of the songs I named are on Extreme, SuperNova, as well as at least one home mix each.

That's true, but aren't most of those songs kind of difficult to access on Extreme and SuperNova to the casual player? I don't know if it applies to those specific songs or not but don't you have to know to hold both yellow arrows at the song selection screen in order to access all the older songs.

With Supernova, I didn't even realize there was an all music mode until a few weeks ago when I was going through all the options.

So would I be able to play stuff like Conga Feeling and Heaven on Supernova? If so, wanna tell me how to get to those songs, because those two are my favorite DDR songs, along with some others from one of the first PS2 DDR games (In The Navy, Tsugaru, etc...)

I think the last arcade machine Conga Feeling was on was 5th Mix. Heaven was never in an arcade mix. In the Navy was last in 4th Mix +. I'm not sure but Tsugaru could be in Supernova.

All of those songs except Tsugaru are licensed songs and I don't think Supernova has any licensed songs from older mixes.

Tsugaru is in Supernova, and YoshiFan is correct on the rest you mentioned.

When you play Supernova, and you're selecting your difficulty, continue to push the right arrow button until you get to the "all music" option.

Awesome. I love Tsugaru. I still haven't found a song I like as much as the Heaven mix on that PS2 game though. Do any of you pros have any recomendations of awesome songs that wouldn't be extremely hard?

Centerfold might be a good choice since it's also a remake song done by Captain Jack (since you said you liked In The Navy). I think it's a 5 foot on standard, and either a 6 or 7 on Heavy, I don't know what it is on Light.

I think I actually managed (just barely) a 5 foot when I played Supernova, so I'll have to check it out.
